Anybody remember "Hopalong Henry", or whatever his name was....Old guy who used to meander between North 18th and the retirement home over there on 165.....One day back in high school, I parked at a red light, and all of a sudden, heard the passenger side door open, and this wrinkled old smelly dude with a cane and hair coming out of his nose and ears sat down and shut the door. (smelled like he hadn't bathed in months, combined with whiskey) He told me to just drop him off down the road. I didn't know whether to laugh or beat his old wrinkly arse.....but after a moment of tense reflection, dude seemed harmless in a completely insane sort of way, so I dropped him off at the home. Scared the shite out of me at first.........I think that dude died shortly after all of that....

What was the name of the old cowboy looking-guy who walked everywhere? He was a local legend and eventually was struck by a car and died. I think he lived in West Monroe but I remember seeing him walking out on US 165 North one time.

Tex Roper (I think)

He's still around.

And of course, there's the guy that dresses up in petticoats and propped up boobs and walks up and down the streets in both towns. Definitely goes for the shock value.

I've seen this guy a few times. TigerJED and I saw him at McAllister's one time. Freaked the hell out of TigerJED who couldn't get out of there fast enough.

guys used to throw shopping carts off the 13th floor.
They threw a coke machine off one night. After that they started locking up the break rooms by the elavator at 10:00.

Reppin' da Ouachita City

My Dad has had a camp at the Hooker Hole for over 30 years. When I was in high school I ran with a bunch of Linville/Marion guys and my Mother is from Dean. You may have known my Great Uncle Pat McCormick. I claim most of Union from Walnut Tree landing on Lake D'Arbonne (Bernice Highway) to the Ouachita River.

There is no place like home and for the rest of you, you better take a bath in Ouachita before you cross the bridge. We don't want any pollutants getting in.

The semester The Bleachers opened it snowed for almost a week. School was canceled because of it but that didn't keep us from going there every night. The band Zebra, a Led Zeplin cover band that had an album of there own songs was there that week. The semester starting off that way caused a lot of my buddies to have really bad grades. It caused a couple of them to have to stay at NLU for an extra semester.

I don't think there's too many of us North Monroe people in this thread or else there would have been more T&C, Superette, and Gene Cox mentions.

Boom! Gene used to sell us beer on Sundays. And I can't believe Freddy's hasn't gotten a mention yet.

Did you go to school with Judy or Jessica James? I graduated with Judy. One of my best friends dated her for a while. I saw her at our reunion recently.

The Tonga Island Restaurant and Lounge...

Waaaay back for me, too. While attending NLU, I worked in the Twin City Mall, and we'd go there to "shut down" after work..

Also props to the memory of TacoBandito! We'd skip school and go there for lunch a lot. I've tried to tell my kids about the "Bandito", and even googled it, trying to find that funny looking rabbit logo to show them!!

went to school with her and she used to walk over to the townhouses where I lived next to T&C apts to play when we were in 2nd...this was when she wore those thick glasses that had masking tape over one eye...then I moved, moved back in 4th, but we didn't really hang out then.

Anybody remember The Hitch, the place on Cypress St. in West Monroe. You could buy six chopped beef sandwiches for a buck ...
