I'm confused. What is unsafe about sleeping outdoors? Was a bear or lion going to get him? It may not be what some would choose to do but criminal act???

They're our future! Lord knows nobody has ever survived an entire night outside anywhere.
It is going into the high 60's at night. They live in a poor working neighborhood in a $65k house. (probably a rental) The neighborhood is clean and maintained.
Behind their house is a wooded patch. There is a chain link fence around the backyard. Mosquitos may be the biggest danger.
I hope mom does not lose her job due to this. I feel bad for her.
ETA- If it was a daughter, I am against it, at any age.

He was going to catch ebola from a infected squirrel which shits in his mouth while sleeping. Nature you scary.

Did any of you actually read the article? The kid had a blanket and pillow while sleeping on the back patio.
He was just camping out in the backyard. Don't all kids do that?

My kids have invited freinds to our camp, but they never come back. We like to fish late night under the camp. On occasion you'll have a possum, coon, or armadillo scurry by. The way these kids act you would swear it were bears or lions. My 10 year old daughter laughs at the older boys (13-14-15) when they go flying upstairs.

Parents can't keep kids from coming back in because that's now too much.
Parents can't spank their kids because that's abuse these days.
Parents can "ground" their kids all they want, but there's really nothing they can do to keep a kid from leaving the house. Especially when the kids KNOW a parent won't spank or assert any authority.
So...what can parents do anymore besides feed, cloth, & transport their kids?

A blanket and pillow! Why, in Alabama that's considered 5 star accommodations!

She was just preparing him for what life would be like if he doesn't start listening. He'll be homeless or a guest of the state. I dont have an issue with what she did, although im assuming that she periodically checked on him. I wouldnt do it, but thats because I have a daughter. I used to camp out outside all the time.

Lol at you clowns thinking 13 year-olds can't be locked outside. The dude wasn't made to fend for himself in Nam. He was given a basic camping set and told to hang on the porch. My dog can do this safely.
Some of you are idiots.
