well... to be clear the "synthetic" designation is mostly (as in 100%) marketing...
Mobil 1 is a very good, very highly refined mineral based oil with a very good additive package.
A True "synthetic" oil (as in ester based) is going to cost you up to $20 a quart..
Now I'm really confused.

Can one of you oil baws tell me definitively if GM Deros is or is not full synthetic? I see varying answers on google.

GM dexos is nothing more than a spec certification. I believe it's up to the oil company on how they want to meet it

GM licenses the Dexos certification to motor oil manufacturers that can then choose to offer a full-synthetic variation, as long as it meets the requirements.

Short version is that in most cases the term "Synthetic" on oil is a marketing tool... the biggest differentiation between most oils labeled as "synthetic" and those that are not is the refining of the oil and the additive package included with the oil.
In fact, the oil drain intervals advertised on oils is mostly due to the degradation of the additives in the oil. The additives being those components that suspend and/or neutralize corrosive agents and so forth...
Ester based oils are truly synthetic in that they are not mineral based and as a result are much more costly to produce. As a result, mineral based oils which are labeled "Synthetic" (Mobil 1 I am looking at you...) are usually in the $5 to $8 per quart range while Ester based oils can range from $12 to $20 per quart.
For the record, Mobil 1 is a fabulous oil for most of our cars and none of what I am saying is to be interpreted as a knock on them...

One can dive DEEP down the rabbit hole with oil. Bobistheoilguy is a great resource if you want to learn or discuss oil or to learn to interpret oil analysis.
I have used M1 synthetic with extended drains (10-12k) on (almost) all my engines for 20+years and have had 3 vehicles run fine for 400-500k miles. 5q and a Fram filter is under $30 at Walmart. Fram filters suck in the grand scheme but again I have had them continuously for 400k+ so they are apparently good enough.
I said almost with M1 since I do have a car that requires a special blend of small lot German Castrol that I have never deviated from.

The best oil and lube is SWEPCO. Especially their greases and hydrolic fluids.
