It will only make things worse.

The rules needed to be adjusted for inflation. That's one way politicians continually screw the middle class.

Benefits are typically written in hard numbers and tax revenues are written to be adjusted for inflation.

When labor cost more, employers buy less of it.

The main intent is to bring down the average hours worked per week which it will.

People that have been getting screwed will benefit, people that haven't will be mostly unaffected.

Employers try to explain these things as negatives by assuming that they will make adjustments to negate the rule but its just a bluff most of the time because skilled salaried people will leave their over paid worthless arse if they aren't treated fairly.

This is a sellers market for skilled labor right now.

Nice example of a typical employer bluff by Roger there.

The work has to be done and skilled labor is a finite resource.

If the employer complains about being squeezed by this update, you probably need to fire this employer and look for a more successful one because they are definitely out there.

This rule will also negatively affect some employees. One lady I supervise is currently an exempt employee who is never asked to work overtime and she never does. She is a 16 year employee but her salary falls below the threshold. As an exempt employee, she does not punch a clock, she can run occasional personal errands on company time, go to doctor or dentist without taking PTO, and no one cares if she is a little late or takes a long lunch. These are certain liberties she has earned as a good employee.

With this rule change, she will lose these liberties and it will essentially act as a demotion for her. She is going to work the same 40 hour week, but now she is going to be held accountable for all her time. This sucks for her and there is no opportunity for her to work overtime and make more money.

Well my company will generally only hire contractors and make them serve out 1.5 years under that contract before they make them employees and that has to be a reason they do things that way. Because hiring anyone is too expensive here for them to not stick around for several years.

Not in my experience. And certainly not for the people affected by this change.

Employers just aren't going to all of the sudden blow up their labor costs.

They simply can't afford to do it.

Can't have it both ways. People want lower cost and higher wages. Not how it works.

I had a job and was getting paid to do the job. There's no reason to pay me differently because I'm working more. It doesn't bother me at all because I'm not an entitled person who thinks that everyone owes me everything

Our boss and owner envisioned this or something similar 50 years ago so he makes salaried and non salaried, manager and non manager, himself, his kids or whomever no matter how much you make punch a time clock. Has forever and no one really seems to mind except for an A&M engineer that brings his lunch to work in a yeti cooler; he bitches about it everyday.

This is not going to go the way Obama "publicly" wants it to go.

Agreed, unintended consequences here-

I've got several good salaried employees in the $32k-$37k area who work 40 hours a week and have (up till now) enjoyed lax regulation on their personal time off to tend to personal issues. The tasks that they perform are only worth what their present pay is. No federal mandate can change that dynamic. The market does. I'm going to convert their present salaries to an hourly rate based on 40 hours and now when they stay home with a sick kid, guess what? They lose.

Thanks Obama.
