Yep, and when the bubble bursts and the middle class’s retirement gets wiped out, the wall-street invester gets bailed out while the middle class hog gets slaughtered.

Blessed are those who do not see, yet believe.
Call me a doubting Thomas. I’ll believe it when I see it.
That's one thing I love about life man. The unexpected. You have shite loads of time in front of you with untold opportunity. Everything is an opportunity. Every person you meet is an opportunity..
Sometimes you have to drop the expectations and just ride for a while. Instead of fighting the inevitable.

Most will have already sold before it goes boom.

No, I'm saying the areas one can go that are ready-built and would make a "right now" difference in how our society operates are either expensive or fairly shitty.
Especially when the appeal is to kids living in urban high rises - even to those who are willing to make a jump to a simpler life.
As mentioned, I'm all about the concept of likeminded people grouping together and starting their own "colonies" so to speak. But you either need financial flexibility, work flexibility, or the ability/idea to create something for yourself in the restricted confines of what might be a fairly desolate place.

I'm sure things will work out differently than what you expect.

This is pretty much what the future will be IMO. For some, that future is immediate. Lifestyle options are faaar more plentiful then they have ever been.

I hope so, because my 20’s were garbage “saving” while everyone around me lived large. Yet, I came out the other side still well behind and barely surviving while they….are living even larger. It may be fueled by debt, but I’m not exactly solvent myself. At least they had fun…f$&k!

Well, I probably shy away from some of your views on this.
I don't think the key to society is more self-indulgence and lifestyle choices. I know that's not how you see it, but I think it's in the same ballpark. I think there is something to be said for balancing lifestyle and productivity. Men need to produce, to work, to accomplish. Some people can to do that in Alaska living out their dreams, some will need to do it in less exciting places doing less exciting things.
Perhaps more than anything (on this topic) we need to somehow return the dignity to mundane-but-useful work.

I gave myself a little time post college but I got married and had kids in my 20s so I wasn't exactly living large by that point either.
Posted on 10/12/21 at 1:24 pm to kingbob
I mean, we all had fun but it was hard work. Hell, I didn't get to choose where I was going to live until I was 40. So it's really foreign to me when people won't move for a better opportunity. I was a nomad from 19-40.

something doesn't quite add up with your story
when i graduated a few years ago, making just 50k, i didn't live large by any means but i definitely had a lot weekends were i blew a lot of money on fun shite... but i never once was close to missing rent or anything like that. i was also flying back to louisiana regularly.

I don't either. But the ability to work remote has never been greater, which gives more people the ability to find economic success almost anywhere.
The fewer physical ties to hold you to a place, the better it is for people. I think then you'll see more entho or ideologically united communities.

Didn't you go back to school later in life?

I don't think Bob's story is sketchy or anything, I just think he's leaving out something.
Either his income is low, something happened creating a large amount of debt he's carrying, or he's spending money on something he hasn't mentioned.
I thought he posted a couple years ago about a divorce but maybe it was a breakup

I just had a one year gap between undergrad and grad school when I worked 80 hrs/week and saved up to live through grad school. In the three working years since grad school combined, I haven’t made near what I made in that one gap year and haven’t gotten anything remotely similar, all while working almost as many hours and paying way more for my housing. The last two years, I’ve made less than $50k each year.
My wife kicked me out (I found out I had a medical issue that would prevent me from getting her pregnant) right at the end of grad school (her parents owned the home we rented) so she could leave me for another man. We divorced 6 months after I graduated, and she was re-married the day the ink was dry, and had a kid almost exactly 9 months later.
I don’t pay alimony or anything like that, and we had no children. I did pay a settlement, but that divorce was cheap compared to most of the stories I’ve heard.

Yeah screw this young generator thinking life should be enjoyable. Life is about misery and hating your family until you retire then you sit on your couch watching Fox News until you die.

Yeah, this is one area you folks have a legit gripe. Something nefarious is going on with the housing market in specific locations. If you are physically tied to those places, it will be rough.
