Become better negotiators
There is a problem with that though, how much leverage does the applicant have to negotiate those terms for an entry level job with stacks of other applicants resumes? People say suck it up and accept your crap job for experience, now try negotiate better terms and benefits? There is just no winning here. It's an employer market and they will find whatever fits their needs with the least amount of resistance.

you don't negotiate the terms at the entry level. you negotiate the terms after you accept the entry level position and prove your value to your employer.
you are not entitled to be vice-president first day on the job just because you have a marketing degree.

It is just pathetic, to say almost ANYTHING and see where the fault is laid...lain...uh, put.
The excuses for failure, for moving back in with their parents (REALLY? Are you kidding? I could not wait to get out on my own), for the hardship, for WHATEVER...They ALMOST ALL come back to the same thing..."It is so hard"...well boo fricking hoo....Go get some work, show some initiative, be creative...DO SOMETHING besides going to coffee bar with your laptop and whine with your fellow losers....
anyway....GTF off my lawn.

Then you don't know shite.
Congratulations, but don't talk about shite you have no clue about it.
Not everyone naturally has connections, and sure as hell not everyone gets an internship making $15 an hour like you insinuated earlier.
You're fortunate to have the connections you do, realize that.

I got a buddy who gives me shite about how much I work and taking classes to advance my career.
He believes that the path to success is laid with putting in his 40 hours a week and showing his company loyalty.
Which is fine, but it frustrates me when he lectures me about working so hard/much. Infuriating.

quote:no shite, that's kind of what I've been getting at this whole thread. it's very, very hard if you don't know that right people. Much harder than it was for our parents.

Again, I'm a millennial. Certain things are tougher now and certain things aren't. Fact is that nowadays our society is set up so that people don't do things as quickly as they used to. (ironically because of tech) Priorities are different on a large scale. There is a lot of opportunities that are far more watered down than they used to be. I'm a musician and there are 10 times more people who want to be professional musicians than let's say 1960. No use complaining though. I'm not.

I'd say this is probably because there are too many worthless majors at colleges and people who finish them are fricked. And on the other end 30% of the freshmen in college never should have been there to begin with. Trade school + experience is what they need. But hey, loans are easy to get and mommy and daddy still think little johnny can be a doctor with his 2.2 high school gpa.

He is wrong and you are right and you know that. Just let him keep on...tell him you think you are moving in the right direction...Congratulate him on his job and his 40...The best hitters in baseball don't just show up for req. BP and the game...they are hitting when they don't have to...

Just putting this out there... (wish chicken gave us an advertisement board to help fellow posters)
If any of you Boomers or Xers have any entry level work you are looking to fill in the NOLA area. I'm a 34yo healthy male that probably has at least a little experience in whatever you maybe hiring for. I'm a prideful hard worker that doesn't mind taking instruction or asking why. Hands on oriented and learns fairly quick. Tustworthy and dependable and don't demand or ask for much more than an opportunity to showcase an so impress.
If you have have anything entry level my email is Edit
Thank you and would love to get a chance to speak with you.

It's harder, yes, but it's not an impossibility, as some make it out to be.
Posted on 1/14/17 at 7:32 pm to Captain_Awesome06
Youre merging two concepts that are mutually exclusive. A college grad with no experience and no advanced degree has no negotiating leverage. Like it or not, you're just not that valuable at that point in your career. You need to take the crap job with all its faults for the experience alone if no other reason. Then you (hopefully) advance and become more valuable. Once you have some worth you can negotiate better terms. It seems the ones who are bitching about how much it sucks, how unfair everything is, how they're better than the jobs they're being offered have unrealistic expectations for their entry level positions. But they fail to realize that's all they're gonna get at that point. They also seem to fail to understand that all their predecessors faced the same challenges. You're not going thru anything new.
I know it sucks. It did for the boomers and Xers and everyone else too. But we got thru it and you will too. Just maybe not on the time schedule you envisioned.

I know this. My point is if the position requires you to have a cell and internet, that's an expense to the employee that will stretch their salary even further. You can do without some other stuff to make it work. The poster I had replied to came across as if it was just as simple to negotiate the employer paying that expense out the gate.
