Military Schools

Anyone here send their kid to a Military School? Thinking this may be a good route for our middle child.

I attended one and it whipped my arse from being a boy into a man. they're not quite as good for networking as many other boarding schools but it will teach you a level of discipline and follow through that is rarely seen in kids these days

Send his arse to the National Guard youth program; I've seen that thing do wonders for some of the urban youth that are forced to go.

My Sister and her husband sent my Nephew to Marion at 14.What it sounded like to me was a bunch of kids put in a College Environment when they were not walking a straight line in a home environment.
I'm sure a lot depends on the individual.
The place gave me the creeps.Reminded me of "Taps".It was used as a Civil War Hospital.
Those Paranormal folks would have a field day there.

I had a roommate at Stanislaus that went to Marion.
He made it sound like it wasn't that bad.

I went to St. John's in Kansas for 4 years. This was during 'Nam, not a pleasant time to be in uniform, especially given my proclivities.
My experience was a mixed bag. Academics were very good and I came out with habits & disciplines I otherwise wouldn't have.
Oh, and $$$$

It's probably not if you're not looking to get in trouble.
I'm sure a lot of kids thrive there and go on to do well.
My Nephews' case,his parents weren't getting the desired results from their parenting of him and thought a Military School would do it.
He was there a year.

My brothers and I went to New Mexico Military Institute in Roswell. It was a great experience for us. We weren't 'problem kids' but there were plenty attending that were there not by choice. Not only did it instill discipline and leadership, the education was top notch.

I graduated from Marion, depending on individuals and issues it can be a good thing or it can be tossing gas on a fire.

Had some friends sent their youngest son to the Marine Military Academy in Harlingen, Texas. He had been a bit of a problem - always in trouble at St. Paul's. the MMA straighten him out.

I have a very good friend that went to Marion. He said it was not a very good idea to group a bunch of misbehaving teenagers in one place 24/7. He said he didn't even know how to be bad until he went to Marion.

Youth Challenge in LA is run by the national guard. But middle school age is too young. The child must volunteer to go. It's free.

Students must be 16 to attend YCP. Also, YCP is a path toward a GED not a diploma.

Will see if I can learn more about this. I'm no OT Baller by any stretch and the one school I priced was about $25K per year. I've already got one in college, although she's on a partial athletic scholarship, it still costs me money each month.
