Larry Vickers is the same way. A fat dude with a goatee who wears generic polo shirts.
Just googled him.

You'd never see a Green Beret with just an ASR today. Army gives shite out for everything now.

He was originally a Green Beret but got out because it was "too boring."

Was he an 18X in that pic? I see crossed rifles on his collars.
It's not just the Army though. The National Defense and GWOT Service are still awarded. So that's already 3 ribbons 31 days into your first unit. I think it's appropriate that the ASR looks like a rainbow.

Edit: Nevermind, I see the SF logo on his shoulder.

I dont disagree, but I dont think its because of superior fighting skills

I think alot of people mistake these guys as brute strength monsters of men that can beat any other man to death with their pinky

That aint what makes these guys elite.

Well they're no match for a new marine with a tan belt in MCMAP.

I don’t think 18X was a thing until like 15 years ago. Do they even still have that program? I’ve heard it’s been a disaster.

That's what Vickers enlisted as in the 70s. Maybe it went away for awhile though.

Yes.

I don't see why. They have their own prep course before SFAS. And the dudes who quit or aren't selected either go straight to the 82nd as airborne qualified 11Bs or reclassed needs of the Army.

A prep course and SFAS and even going through the Q-Course don’t qualify someone from being a competent special forces soldier imo. SF should only select from highly experienced soldiers who have already held at least a squad leader role in the infantry.

True

how can one be a leader in unconventional warfare if they have no experience in conventional warfare

Most new Green Beret's these days will already have those three plus an NCOPD, Good Conduct and probably at least one or two AAMs/ARCOM's. Not counting the 18x program (if still around).

Maybe. I know MARSOC requires 3 years and being an NCO.
But people should still be able to enlist SF. It worked out for Vickers.
Besides, how else is the Army gonna get bodies to fill shitty MOSs?

For every one vickers there are 10 guys that don’t cut it. And not all of them get cut from the pipeline. I’d be willing to wager that there plenty of guys on the teams that really have no business being there.

The Army would be much better served by taking the cream of the crop out of the infantry, letting them serve a tour in SF, then back to the infantry for a few years. Then they can come back to SF if they want to finish their careers there. Just my opinion.

How else would the Army get enough bodies for cooks and water treatment specialists?

Force Recon and Raiders(MARSOC) are just as capable as SEALS if not more so.
