I've owned several of both brands, most recent BMW M5 (2003, E39 model) and most recent MB an AMG E63 (2011, the last of the big naturally aspirated V8s). Build quality is definitely better on MB, I feel comfortable saying that, but connection to the road is a little more there with the BMW. As I've grown older, I've grown to appreciate the quality of materials, etc a bit more, and so my vote is the S. Both exceptional cars - one of my medical partners has a new 7 and it is beautiful, and you would probably save a few bucks going with the 7, but again splitting hairs, I would pick the S class.

I had a 745i until 2012. Will never own another again.. Maintenance nightmare.

Not sure if the Mercedes is any better, however. Looks alone, I am going S-Class

The aesthetics of either the BMW vs the MB are subjective, I personally favor the BMW.

BUT

If you opt BMW, keep this number handy: (800) 332-4269.

7-Series hasn’t been best in class for years.

Benz isn’t much better but it’s the winner of those two.

Base models S vs 7--maybe BMW
anything else, MB all day, err day

They are just a better overall car.

My sister just sold her s65 coupe a month ago, it was pretty fricking sweet

The Benz's interior always shows wear and tear to soon, or else it would be easy answer.

Wow, I think the exact opposite on that. Especially as you get into the higher end MB cars, material quality is excellent. I always thought the BMW interior design was nice, but lacking in quality of material. Of course just one man's opinion, but I have owned and used both brands in the higher range for daily drivers.

Another poster mentioned maintenance - Last MB I owned, I negotiated the three year pre-paid maintenance into the deal (used to amount to about $900), what really gets you on these cars as far as cost of ownership is when you need new tires, or a brake job, etc - get ready to bend over on either. Now as far as dependability goes, my experience with both/either is excellent.

Having owned both an S class and a 7 series, though not a 2018, I would say emphatically the Mercedes.
