Those claiming “it’s a disease” do so by convincing themselves of some sort of moral superiority in ‘not blaming muh victim’; yet how can allowing others to die because of your own insecurity in stating an inconvenient truth be the righteous option?

an interview with editor Judy Wieder done in Amsterdam, "The Great Dyke Hope," was released in July 1994. In it, Etheridge answered Wieder's questions about why the couple wanted to have children: "I think one of the many fears people have about homosexuality is around children. I think that the more gay parents raise good, strong, compassionate people, the better the world will be."
Her words, per wikipedia.
I would disagree with her. Traditional nuclear families are clearly superior in every way, even if that statement of fact is not politically-correct nowadays.

This is heartbreaking. I feel for any parent who loses a child. One of my brothers lost his eldest son to a small plane crash in 2002. My nephew was only 24. The death of a child leaves a hole in the family (and extended family) that can never be filled.
My prayer for Melissa Etheridge, and any parent who loses a child, is that they receive the strength and comfort to get through it.

The only way to become addicted is to do drugs in the first place and not have any control over it.
What about the thousands who were prescribed pain pills from a doctor that they trusted? Your ignorance is on full display!

Sad for anyone to lose a child to drugs.
It can happen to any family,it does not discriminate.
I've seen too many,too young...way too young,all accidental.
Just went a step too far.
It can happen to ANY of us,believe me.
Teach your children well.

That still doesn't make it a disease. It's a side effect of the drugs they take. Quit taking the drugs and the "disease" goes away. How is that not easy to understand?
Claiming addiction is a disease is the way drug addicts validate their problem and not place the blame where it truly belongs------on their shoulders.

Oh wow, you need to patent this ASAP. It’s so simple, isn’t it? How come no one ever thought of this? Nobel prize headed your way.

And 99.9% of us take our pills, get out of pain, then move on with our lives. Should we give up meds that will keep us out of pain when in need because of the .1% who move on to crack and heroin?

Ah, another mature voice of reason chimes in. I've had to take opiods over the years for pain management, mostly due to kidney stone issues and reconstructive joint surgery, but as soon as the problem ends, so does taking any of the meds.
And to tell the truth I really don't use them like prescribed and would rather try an OTC pain reliever than keep taking hydrocodone or whatever else the Dr. prescribes.
