When are they going downtown?
They arent going during the day during the week, they dont go during weekdays at night, and they dont go much during the weekends.
Downtown 3rd street on weekend nights is filled with central, zachary, baker etc people. During the week its a ghost town.
Its all relative.
They used to NEVER EVER go down there. It wasn't even an option as there was nothing there. They do occasionally now. Fraternities even rent out B&T's, or used to, for their parties. Seen lots of college kids at Tsunami happy hour and on weekends at the bars. One of the biggest issues was transportation and this would resolve that.
Making that whole corridor more appealing is a good thing IMO. A better downtown would result and that is very important for the city.
Plus it gives drunk students a safe free/cheap ride.
ETA:
Even when I was still in college in 2011 more and more people were starting to go downtown. The biggest issue we always heard was "how are we getting there and back?". Uber has helped, this will help even more. Connecting LSU to downtown is a good thing.

The last thread had people saying the workers downtown are going to be using it. Why are the workers downtown going to be using it? To go to LSU
When the apartment/condo economy around LSU collapses after the TOPS revamp young professionals will scoop them up. They needs a way to get downtown.

Who is going to occupy the Water Campus?
Why do they need a Tram to get to LSU or to Downtown?
As far as I know it's a Fed/State/Private joint venture, so presumably there could/would be a lot of movement between that and LSU or state offices downtown.
I don't know for sure, though.

The biggest issue was there was nothing down there to go to. Now there is and transportation isnt a problem, especially with something like Uber. College students also have no problem getting into a car and driving.

It is a good thing imo but I dont think this tram will get a ton of use.

They had the drunk bus when I was in school and no one ever used it. LSU students as a whole arent going to use public transportation except to get to school during the day.
Typical scenario on a Friday night for LSU students. Everyone meets at my apartment to have some drinks before going out. Everyone is ready to go out. Hey lets go wait at the bus stop for 20 minutes for the bus/tram....not going to happen. Someone is going to say screw it im driving and we will deal with the driving situation later.

Minor thread hijack: Has anyone ever stepped foot in that shitty little bar where that construction is going on? I never even knew it existed until I saw it while walking on Nicholson from the stadium.
No, I have not. Pass by it all the time, maybe will have to stop in one day. As long as it's daylight and I have a few friends with me.

It's hard to envision, though, how long it could possibly take for a two mile or so stretch of town that is now basically a dead zone to have enough population to justify the huge expense of and realistically support such an endeavor.
No it's really not. Some people just have it. They know when to invest and when not. They're called visionaries
Nicholson Gateway is scheduled for a 2018 completion, bringing 3-4 suite style dorms for upper classmen & graduate students. The area will also include retail, Foundation Building, and restaurants/bars.
The Standard (student living)& another student living complex was built in the last 2 years. LSU is also about to break ground on 2 additional dorms north of the Enchanted Forest.
This does not include the Water Campus and River House which have already broken ground.
Property values between downtown and LSU will only continue to increase.

I don't know about now, but back when it was created (early 2000s) it used to get pretty solid rider numbers. Uber might have put a big dent in it though.

DUI enforcement is bad and parking is bad. The game is changing.
There is stuff to do, but this will lead to MORE stuff to do. It will improve downtown's economy, paving the way for new businesses to open up.

I understand this and it was similar with us, but driving downtown was a different animal at LSU. Also, the world is changing about shite like this IMO and a street car between just LSU and downtown won't have the same "poor people/nasty" stigma as a bus IMO.
I still think its a good idea, especially if Louisiana isn't footing most of the bill.
We'll see what happens if its built.

There's already a bus that runs that exact route and is free. It's often times empty.

Hey, I'm all for growth and improvement too. It seems to be about 50 years coming for that area - it was always inexplicable to me how awful it has been for so long.
I still don't think a few hundred extra people (that's all we're really talking about under the most optimistic assumptions of what you're laying out) justify such a huge expenditure in the 10s of millions of dollars for "transportation" that most will never use that often under any assumption or scenario.

The person that told me this could be wrong, so don't shoot me, but I was told that the federal government will pay for most of it.

Federal taxes you are paying no matter what, that will just be allocated elsewhere if this doesn't happen.

Federal grant money, most likely.

Its damn scary to ride a bike in Baton Rouge
ETA:
Also, until that area is "gentrified" a little, the chances of getting your bike taken are pretty damn high

If you think anyone in their right mind would ride a bike down that stretch of Nicholson or Highland, especially at night after drinking, then you are nuts.
