Simple flight turbulence can motivate a person to never fly again. You don't need injuries and/or deaths to spread fear of flying.
The Hawaii incident is a great example of an incident without "injury" that would likely lead to fewer airline customers. You could easily argue most of those people will never fly United again. A commercial airliner taking a nose dive towards the water? Yeah, that's doing some damage to one's willingness to get on an airplane and leading to fewer flying miles.
I am saying your fear is probably unfounded considering nearly 3 million people fly a day in and out of the USA. Are you afraid to ride in a car?
