Dr. Rebekah Gee, LDH secretary said it is good public policy for Medicaid to cover mosquito repellent for female enrollees who are pregnant or attempting to become pregnant.

LA Medicaid Covers Mosquito Repellent Due to Zika Concerns

I'm glad they are covering it for pregnant women because Zika sounds terrifying. But "trying to get pregnant" and "Medicaid" Does not compute.

Medicaid is for poor people. Medicare is for old people.

I'll try and defend it.

You can't physically stop Medicaid users from having kids short of sterilizing them, so the next best option is to stop the kids they are having from being deformed. Deformed kids will probably up ER costs and all that good stuff so it's cheaper "in the long run" to just pay for mosquito repellent.

They are too lazy to even buy bug spray.

Valid points, I agree. Just wish we would discourage people a bit. Wife knew someone once who was pissed because Medicaid wouldn't cover fertility treatments.

And this is right. It's got to be insanely cheaper to supply bug spray to every poor woman than to pay for the medical costs of a bunch of Zika kids

OP understands. It doesn't compute that people who can't afford their own health care think they can afford a new child.

Exactly. I'm not trying to judge poor people, but their child does not have much of a chance if they are actively trying to get pregnant without having resources. Woman in BR last year was on the news who had 9 kids but no food in the house, for example. The kids hadn't even gone to school because the woman didn't want to pay for copies of birth certificates. Those kids don't stand a chance.

Yet they are trying to bring a child into the world.

You'd be shocked if you found out how much money you have to make to not qualify for Medicaid.
