If no souls on board, can it be landed with service module attached?
I would guess no.
My guess is that the service module connects to the bottom of the capsule where the heat shield is. Trying to re-enter with it attached, at best you burn it off since it isn't protected. At worst it causes damage to the heat shield and the entire capsule is lost.

Your comments about Shuttle were uneducated and showed a lack of knowledge about the program.
I'm sure your grandfather knew Apollo.

don't quite understand why this capsule was even funded.
Because NASA got out of the space business a long time ago, and is now funneling tax dollars to politically expedient defense corporations under the guise of advancing space exploration.
They're just a contracting agency that funds corporate welfare ventures as directed by Congress.

Space is real. I just don’t understand why we spend so much money exploring it.

But there has been a ton of useful data gleaned from STS that might otherwise still be 'out there.'
Not sure there's much that couldn't have been achieved by not building onto skylab. Especially given skylab and spacelab were designed by quite literally the same exact folks.

For example, LDEF - not sure if there would have been capability to return it apart from the shuttle.
If I'm gonna stick with my mcd&d theme, the delta ii was capable of returning it to a stable orbit, but not Earth. Since the rescue was delayed until 1990.

And it has been a treasure trove of material data that has shaped spacecraft design ever since.
Pushed designs right back to rockets

As John Young once described it to us the shuttle is nothing more than a pickup truck. I don't really keep up that much with space today but is there capability to retrieve and return satellites from LEO via other means?
Mr Young showed up to my grandpa's funeral, with the other 2 a16 guys. The look on his face when I said "like the parkway?" was epic. I really respect them for finding the oldest grandkids and telling us about their ride on top of the 3rd stage. Space truck is a fairly solid analogy. Not sure what they could toss on top of an IB loadout vs the shuttle bay off top of head, but I'm sure they weren't always 100% compatible.
I certainly don't hate on the leo research at almost 0 grav, because it is vital to further exploration. I only contend the shuttle wasn't necessary to achieve that, and the multiple catastrophic failures only served to slash budgets more than they already were. 50 years later we've just circled back to rockets, and the 3 previously competing companies are 1 jumblefrick.

Where exactly do you think spacelab operated from?

Government and govt contractor jobs in politically important congressional districts is why. It's a poker chip in how politics work.

DCMA and NASA have a lot in common, and that's saying a lot

Suni Williams
Name rings a bell.
Someone a while ago started a thread with pics asking which female astronaut would you chose if you had to be stuck in space. Surprisingly quite possibly the least attractive one out of the bunch was a very popular pick. Consensus being she has to be highly qualified to look like that and be in her position

These failures are by private companies. When government contracts out to third parties, shite fails but cocksuckers get richer

Boeing has been sucking on the govt teet for a very long time. Maybe it's time to end the corporate welfare and end the tax payer handouts to them.
