Japan lost that war on Dec 7th, 1941.
No one disputes this fact. The only thing I and others have pointed out is a Japanese victory at Midway could very well have lengthened the war by possibly two years. The outcome though was never in doubt, though in the months between Pearl Harbor and Midway that fact was not as obvious as it is now with the benefit of hindsight.

From Dutch Harbor to Tokyo is about 2800 miles.
There is a reason we never used the Aleutians as a base to bomb Japan and instead slogged our way from island to island across the Pacific. Think about it.

even if the Japanese had won the naval battle, taking Midway would have been extremely costly...Midway was extremely well fortified and better manned than Wake.

It’s ironic the Japanese who used a carrier attack to try to wipe out our fleet in one massive blow did not themselves yet fully grasp that aircraft carriers had made battleships obsolete. The fact they concentrated their attacks on Battleship Row proves they still viewed battleships as the apex warship of the age.
Well, as the carriers weren't there that was the next best target in their eyes.
Much smarter would have been to take out the oil tank farms and the drydocks. That would have crippled the Pacific fleet for a very long time as they would have had to be based out of west coast ports.
eta-While there were old school admirals that still subscribed to the power of the battleships, the US Navy had them as well, Yamamoto was not one of them.

If you're conducting a sustained air campaign you need bases that aren't socked in 75% of the time. If you're only flying one, or a handful of missions, you can afford to wait for a sunny day.

Midway is arguably the most decisive battle in the history of naval warfare.
Sir Francis Drake has entered the chat.

It would have taken two or three more years—-and 100s of 1000s, maybe millions of additional lives.
