A Houston furniture salesman, attempting to mitigate millions of dollars in potential refunds from a promotion, placed one of the largest bets ever taken by a U.S. bookmaker on Tuesday at a Mississippi sportsbook.

Jim "Mattress Mack" McIngvale, owner of Gallery Furniture in Houston, bet $3.5 million on the Houston Astros to win the World Series at the DraftKings sportsbook at Scarlet Pearl casino in Biloxi, Mississippi. At +220 odds, the wager would pay a net $7.7 million if the Astros win the World Series.

Dumbest thing I've ever read. He has done more for the city of Houston than anyone ever has or will ever do. The man is a saint.

What's your take on the refund situation?

I know it says he's making the bets to hedge his promotional exposure but is he really just a high functioning degenerate gambler?

He's been doing it for a couple years. I remember a few years ago it was just picking the winner between Broncos and Seahawks and getting your thousands in furniture for free.

He placed a 3.50 million dollar wager, if that gives you a clue.

So I actually googled the promotion instead of asking in this thread. You have to buy a minimum $3000 mattress set to qualify. If the Astros win the world series you can get a refund or 150% store credit. This guy is a smart. He's winning either way.

He put his 16.9 million dollar mansion with a 1 acre swimming pool on Lake Travis on the market. Of course he’s my neighbor.

He’s an extremely personable guy. Hangs out at the store all the time and talks with customers. He’s a great salesperson and philanthropist

Old MM wrestling commercial

Some of his first commercials were on the Houston/Paul Boesch wrestling shows in the early '80's.

When we bought our house in Katy after Katrina, it came with a $2,000 gift certificate to Gallery Furniture.

We went to go spend it. We needed a whole house of furniture. So we were hoping the $2,000 would cover a portion of it, and we would just pay the rest out of our contents insurance check. Start talking to the sales rep, nice guy, he chats us up, finds out our story. We pick out a living room set and a master bedroom set, and are starting to look at dining sets, sales rep says I'm gonna go use the bathroom if y'all don't mind, I'll be back in a few min, y'all keep looking.

Comes back a few min with this goofy looking white dude, it's Mack. Mack asks us where we are from, how we heard about the store, etc. A nice 20 min conversation. Dude was very warm and nice with us. He wishes us the best of luck, welcomes us to Houston, and goes on his way.

We pick out the dining set, pick out the guest room furniture, pick out mattresses, and after about 3 or so hours, we are done. We added it up and it was over $6,000 before tax.

Salesman takes us to the area where you pay. They add it all up and with tax it's like $3468, and we owe $1468 after the gift certificate. Wife and I look at each other, and I tell the clerk, did y'all get everything?

She says, "Mack says, God Bless You." They sold us everything at half off.

14 years later, we have replaced the soft and love seat, and both mattresses, and we sold the guest room furniture after a few years when we needed the room for our second child, but still have everything else.

Mack is truly a Great American.

I know he used to get insurance from Lloyd's for these promotions, maybe they won't do it anymore and that's why he has to bet now.
