Ask anybody that graduated high school in the 80's in Louisiana and none of us were taught this. I went to LSU in the 80's and we didn't use it there either. It may be like 500 years old but my parents weren't taught that and neither was I.

My kid's math teacher, who has taught math at the same school for 40 years, told me that he used to not teach PEMDAS until the 90's, and none of the other schools in our parish did either. At LSU we did not use it either in the 80's. Don't know how I can be wrong. Why do you think some people in this thread keep coming up with 70 as the answer? Not because they're stupid, but because they weren't taught PEMDAS in school.

1x + 2y = 5
We used order of operations for this equation, you're right.
But 5+5x10 would have been written 5+(5x10).

There are two mugs plus two mugs in the equation equaling 9. That means that each mug equals 1, so 5+2+2=9. The last equation only has one mug so 5+(1x10)= 15.

Dude, it's defined in the third problem. Burgers are five, right? So 5+two mugs+two mugs = 9. That means two mugs have to equal two, hence they equal one each.
