she didn't quite know how to correctly get to the answer.

He multiplied both sides of the Fx equation by (.866/.5), so now the equation is -.866A+1.5B=0.
Thanks, I couldn't see that. Still not sure how they got the answer, but close enough, frick it I need a drink

So when you add equations 2 and 3, the A terms cancel out and lets you solve for B.

It's why I used they and their for gender neutrality
plus it's obviously a guy, you can tell by the scribble scratch, and that no girl would have passed the prerequisites
j/k

He said girl because in his mind the student didn't know what he or she was doing

Under the Fx equation, he wrote "solve for b" and multiplied both sides of the equation by (.866/.5) so that when adding the new equation 3 to equation 2 the A will cancel out, allowing him to solve for B.
ETA: never mind, others beat me to it. But to add to that, this is a perfectly legit way to solve the problem. Personally I would just use the substitution method you mentioned, but there are a thousand ways to skin a cat in physics.

Yes, but why? Is that some common core bullshite math they're teaching now?
Of course, I'm good in math, so maybe that is why you don't get it.

frick off. I understand it, I just don't like that method. I guess it's easier for slower students though.
I'm great at math. I never took a calculus class. Instead I taught myself from a textbook in my spare time and took the AP test. I made a 5 and never had to take it in college.

This is what always pissed me off in general engineering courses like this.
He clearly gets the right answer; but may have not done it the way you the grader wanted him to do it.
He used tools he already learned to get the right answer; give the kid the frickinh points.
