MARTA train service has been restored at six stations after a fire shut down two stations for about two hours Thursday. Trains are running northbound and southbound between the Peachtree Center, Civic Center, North Avenue, Midtown, Arts Center and Lindbergh Center stations, officials said.

Single-tracking is in effect at the North Avenue and Midtown stations, which were closed earlier. The northbound platform of both stations are closed.

?ORIGINAL STORY: MARTA officials evacuated a southbound train Thursday after a fire broke out on a high-voltage rail track near the North Avenue station, a spokesman said.

The North Avenue and Midtown stations are expected to be closed until about 10 p.m. as officials work to investigate what sparked the fire, MARTA spokesman Erik Burton said.

The stations are expected to be fully functioning by Friday morning, he said.

Yeah this is normal. that's why you're not supposed to smoke on the rail.

Hey now, fires are less frequent than previous years according to the WaPo.

Well, it wasn't the Falcons offense that started the fire.

That was extinguished some time late in the 3rd quarter of the Super Bowl.

When I moved to ATL in 2000 I was overwhelmed with how amazingly healthy the infrastructure was. The streets all over the city were kept up. The medians, the public transportation, etc. After the economic collapse of 2007/8 everything has gone down. Even the wealthy suburbs of Buckhead Dunwoody EastCobb Roswell have potholes half the depth of a car tire and they "fix" them by placing metal plates over them which are just as damaging to your car as the potholes. Now with the 85 collapse and the 20 explosion and Piedmont being shut down, 285 can take a person 4 hours to drive 30 miles. And MARTA has too many employees who have not kept up maintaining the transit system so now that it's being heavily used by suburban Atlanta, it's crumbling from the weight. And taxes keep rising and more and more people keep moving into the city and surrounding suburbs are ever expanding.

When my family and I visited Atlanta in '95 my old man said MARTA must stand for "Moving Africans Rapidly Through Atlanta."

Yeah, he's a racist old cuss.

I used MARTA all the time when I first moved here and had a condo in Midtown. I made the mistake of buying out in the suburbs after the economic collapse buying a large foreclosed home and a dirt cheap price. Now I wish I still lived in the city center. I work in Buckhead. When we used MARTA I saw the ratio of (on the rails) 60-75% white. I never used the buses so I can't say the ratio there.

Now with the 85 collapse and the rails being standing room only, the rail system is majority whites asians Indians using park and ride into the city.

That's not what I've been seeing. MARTA has done significant track replacement, fire control systems and lighting upgrades in the tunnels, and is in the process of replacing its oldest train cars within the next few years.
