Read HW Brands The General vs The President. It is MacArthur in Korea and his insubordination with Truman. Great read. Frankly he had more failures than victories but he had plenty of American political support.

There weren't enough landing craft and other resources to support simultaneous campaigns. MacArthur and Nimitz had to take turns going on the offensive.

My former neighbor, now deceased, was a Marine combat veteran who fought in the Solomons and was wounded at Guadalcanal. He hated MacArthur. Called him "Dugout Doug". He never forgave MacArthur for evacuating Corregidor and abandoning the troops. Another Manila combat veteran that I worked with told me that when his unit attacked in Manila, the U.S. forces were told to avoid and not damage a big fancy hotel there in Manila that MacArthur owned. He said the Marine and Navy air corps then shot and bombed it to pieces. Apparently, they didn't like him, either.

MacArthur didn't like the Navy in general and Marines in particular. He made sure the Marine units under his command got as little recognotion as possible.

MacArthur had a habit of freezing like a deer in the headlights under pressure. He did in the Phillipines and again in Korea when the Chinese attacked. OTOH he was not a coward. He intended to stay and die in the Phillipines until ordered out. He fully expected to be brought home and courtmartialed. Instead. Roosevelt gave him a Medal of Honor.

Midway was the end of their ability to truly go on the offensive. But May, at the battle of coral sea showed they were mortal

But a lot of brutal fighting still remained

I have a German army helmet complete with eagle logo on the side. I guess my grandfather brought it back.

I often wonder did we have to "island hop" at all? Maybe Mac Arthur had the right idea and we went about it the wrong way.

Once we won at Midway and Coral Sea we pretty much had the Japanese cut off. All we had to do was sink the rest of their shipping and let the troops on the various islands starve. Can't fly planes or do much without fuel and supplies. We want Iwo Jima for instance. We take it later after cutting it off and starving those troops out. They can bushido and banzai all they want, they still have to eat.

For that matter instead of firebombing cities, maybe we should have been destroying crops and attacking fishing vessels. Let them ship troops to the main islands they have to feed them, then destroy as much food as we can.

Instead of losing all those men just starve them out. War ends in 1946 maybe and a bunch of starved out husks give it up

Folks that have a chance to visit Manila, need to take the day boat trip to Corridgador. Its been maintained in original context well and shows the horror of the navel bombardments. Probably the best kept and expenses paid for by the *US

MacAuther’s dad was a union general in the civil war... and MacAuther has a son who is still alive.... pretty wild.
