I'm looking to schedule my first Manresa retreat. I'm thinking early December ( I've heard the grounds are really pretty when decorated for Christmas ) or early Spring, sometime in March.

I've tried to get a few friends interested but with work, wife, kids, etc, it's difficult to coordinate.

It looks like I'll be going alone which might not be a bad thing.

Would love to hear any advice on what to look forward to, when to try and schedule, etc.

Make time to do it and just go. You won't regret it.

Bring plenty of beer and go to the St Michaels grotto.

Your head will clear by about hour 72 and it’s awesome.

I have several family members that have gone regularly for years. They absolutely love it. From what I hear of it, I don’t think it’s something I would enjoy but many people do. I’m assuming you’re Catholic?

I’ve gone to 2 non Denominational Men’s Retreats that are aligned with the ACTS style of retreat activities. I dreaded going to the first one but truly ended up getting a lot out of it. For me personally. A silent retreat would be tough but I hope that you go and have a very enriching experience.

I’ve got a buddy who goes every year. He loves it. Says it does wonders for him.

More power to you...I wish I was able to keep quite for a whole weekend but I dont think I could do it

But it would be nice to go a whole weekend without anyone talking to me or asking me any questions

Since it’s a silent retreat, going with a group only really helps at meals when you sit at a table.

If it’s silent, how is this better than going solo camping for a weekend with no electronics?

Very encouraging, I have heard great things.

Would it be a better experience as a group or going alone?

If a priest silently motions you to come to his room for a drink exercise extreme caution.

I’ve heard great things about Manresa. I have gone on Jesuit run retreats like Manresa but not there. It can definitely be a worthwhile experience. It takes a bit to adjust to silence and being unplugged from the rest of the world and you will notice the absence of silence after you go back home.

I prefer to go when the weather is nice (like spring or fall) as you spend a lot of time outdoors (at least I do).

As Manersa is a Jesuit retreat house they probably follow the Ignatius Spiritual Exercises format

I’ve been many times. You’ll love it. Don’t worry about going alone as it’s a silent retreat. I go with a whole group of guys and we don’t speak to or acknowledge each other the whole time. It won’t affect your experience.

Solo camping can certainly be a similar experience. Some like the spiritual exercises that can guide reflection.
