No, it was only safe by New York standards.

In the mid-2010s the NYC murder rate per 100,000 was 3.2. That’s city wide. It was even lower in Manhattan.

Compare that to the per 100,000 murder rate of these lovely cities.

St. Louis, MO (69.4)
Baltimore, MD (51.1)
New Orleans, LA (40.6)
Detroit, MI (39.7)
Cleveland, OH (33.7)
Las Vegas, NV (31.4)
Kansas City, MO (31.2)
Memphis, TN (27.1)
Newark, NJ (25.6)
Chicago, IL (24)
Cincinnati, OH (23.8)
Philadelphia, PA (20.2)
Milwaukee, WI (20.0)
Tulsa, OK (18.6)
Pittsburgh, PA (18.4)
Indianapolis, IN (17.7)
Louisville, KY (17.5)
Oakland, CA (17.1)
Washington D.C. (17.0)
Atlanta, GA (16.7)

Alvin Bragg, Manhattan DA, says crime is down in NYC. Of course it is if these people aren’t charged with felonies. Give them a slap on the wrist and a debit card for their offense!

Amazing how quickly NYC has gone to shite after Rudy cleaned it up. Manhattan in the 2000s was one of the safest places in the world. This isn’t supposed to be a bad area either.

Manhattan is still safer than Jxn, MS x 1000. I was there for several days this past June.

People don’t just line up against the wall on platforms scared they’re gonna get pushed in, they mill about as always. I ride the 2/3 every day. Also there were less murders last year than any year Rudy was mayor.

I've been wanting to take a family trip to NYC at some point, and I know stories like this CAN be overblown. Just wondering if it's really safe to ride the subways while there.

before going ask your local fire station if they have any spare flame retardant clothing

If they do, and they fit, then yes
