I saw this story earlier and it's obviously a tragic accident. There have been several people accidentally killed by MRI machines over the years in this sort of situation.
But after hearing the details yikes, it's cartoonishly stupid.

There's a quench button that the tech can press that releases the liquid helium. However, it renders the magnet useless so it can be a 3-5 million dollar button press
