It was basically 2 hours of, "this is how to have a better mindset, so you can deal with the pain better."

How about, and I'm just spit-balling here, MAYBE... my attitude would be better if I wasn't in constant pain.
Call me crazy, but IF we could, you know, FIX the CAUSE of the pain, I wouldn't need to worry about my attitude when dealing with it.

You could hit them in the foot with a big hammer, then tell them to take their big attitude aboot it down just a notch or two. Then, congratulate them on beginning to receive understanding.
