You don't have to use a funeral home either, I don't think. I'm much older than most of you folks, but I can recall going to a couple of funerals as a child where the visiting was held in the front room of the house.
Then church the next day, then the ground.
I don't think embalming is required either, but I don't think you can transport a body across state lines without it being embalmed.
Not sure why I believe I know this stuff.

That’s how it used to be. But now I think the funeral homes colluded with the State to get laws passed that force you to use them, at least in some capacity.
As in they force you to buy or at least rent a casket for them to cremate the body.
