Last weekend I played in a hold'em tournament for the first time in probably close to a year. It was only 6 of us. We each put up $50 and we paid out the top two. I ended up winning. When I started head to head I was not the chip leader so when I asked the other person if they wanted to split they said no. So we played head to head for about 45-50 mins before I won.
Tell me if I am wrong, but the one thing that GTO does not factor in, is personalities you play against. Of course when you are playing in big tournaments when you don't know most of the people playing, you have to set some type of strategy, but also be willing to adapt your strategy depending on the type of players that are at the table.
In those situations (when I am playing at a table in which I don't really know the other players), especially early in the game when the blinds are cheap, I never play if someone raises before the flop, I have to have a strong hand to play before the flop (and position also makes a difference) and if I don't have the best possible hand after the flop, I will check through, but if someone bets I will fold. Basically I start off conservative, which is similar to how I approach no limit. Sometimes in no limit I can be too conservative, but in tournament play, most of the time I will get less conservative as blinds go up.
I like to establish myself as being a conservative player so that as the game goes on, in theory, I can change how people, who like to bluff more than the average person, plays their game. If the person who has been playing conservative all of a sudden bets big, then logic says that person has a strong hand. It doesn't always work that way, but I think the thing that you have to do is be willing to adapt throughout the game.

it's all about ranges, both what you read and what you present for the other guy to read. if you ever watch poker analysis and you hear something about being balanced or avoiding polarizing your range, it's the same sort of concepts

yes you have to adapt but if they play pretty consistently one way, you can really begin to narrow their range and calculate your strategy better (like bluffing, fold equity, value betting, everything)
