People are bad risk managers. I agree that, as the linked paper describes, many people use thought strategies that "typically reduce processing demands" - these people serial downvote literally anything that is against their worldview, instead of evaluating it on its own merits and either including it or excluding it into their risk management strategy.

These were microscopic changes seen only after slicing up their heart and looking at it in the lab after they were dead.

bullshite. Went into CHF due to a infection/virus. Got to the point I was seeing a heart transplant team every month. As time went by, my heart started repairing itself. Last EF check was just below 20%.

The prerequisite would have been similar studies done prior to 2019 on people with these same preconditions (but obviously without COVID). I have no clue whether/not these studies exist.
It looks like the goal of this study was to improve treatment options. There is no value in using it as a basis for decision-making at the public and/or political level. From what you were also saying though - nothing about the science (from the MD level) looks all that unusual.
