Not saying dorms suck, just wondering if its just a way for the university to secure $$$.

It is. They got you by the balls in the situation. Like people have said, living off campus is cheaper and better. Rent is cheaper, no meal plan, etc.

The people saying it's worth it are the people that had to do it. No one in their right mind is going to pick living in a dorm when you have the option of off campus apartment with a pool and whatever else they have

On campus life your freshman year is worth staying in a shitty dorm. I was in Kirby Smith in the early 2000s and admit it was awful. Luckily I was in a fraternity and got to know a lot of people in Herget/McVoy/Miller and realized there are nice areas to live. And when I say nice, I mean you are around friends and girls. Not that the dorm itself is nice. I've heard Kirby is better now. The one thing I'd avoid is an all male dorm with no girls close. 18 yo boys will live like heathens pissing in elevators and shitting in the hallway without the need to keep up appearances for girls.

I was in Kirby in the 2000's as well. Not exactly fancy living but looking back it wasn't completely awful. Luckily I lived on the 5th floor so taking the stairs was an option most days and the fact you shared a bathroom with 3 others max was an upside to me. But yeah the elevator was shite. I recall there being a metal plate in the floor to cover a hold that would have gone into the shaft. Plus there weren't even numbers on the buttons for the floors. Also the first week we went to Lowe's and bought some cheap berber carpet and laid that down in the room.

Serious bump I know. I ended up deciding on and being put in Broussard. Hoping it was relatively decent with you all.

Off campus apartments are cheaper and there's not a move out date (like between semesters in a dorm.)

frick that. If you're entering as a freshman, especially if you're out of state, live in the dorms. You'll meet more people that way, you never have to worry about parking during the week, and moving out at the end of the semester isn't an issue, since you'll get an apartment before the start of your sophomore year.

WHY? WTF? DUde kirby or Herget is where its at. Both are coed. Kirby has a bathroom in your room you share with roommate and another room and has bigger rooms. Herget is coed and right next to slut central in miller.

WHY in the frick would you chose to live in broussard?

You ask the OT for advice, the majority advise you to stay in Herget, and then you reject our advice. Bold strat

If you're in the business school live in the Business residential college next to the pentagon.

Broussard.

I stayed here my freshmen yr. It's 2.5 floors. Ground level floor was all girls, they also had a half quasi-basement thing that was chicks. Second floor was all dudes.

Has really nice study areas. Plus a common area with a big TV and ping pong tables. And a nice little courtyard to hang out in.

Lots of parking behind it too in the West Campus Apt parking lots.

Not a bad place.

I wouldn't stress too much. I enjoyed Broussard. It's the old athletes dorms before West Campus/East Campus Apts were built. It's not terrible at all.

I found the rooms to be bigger than those in other dorms.

30 second walk to the cafeteria, and about 5 minutes to Tiger Stadium.

I had the corner room at the top of the stairs on the second floor. It was 3 of us in there. The far window I popped out to gain roof accessibility. The lobby extends out for all the study areas. I would sit up there drinking and hitting golf balls at the old softball field.

I lived in McVoy freshman year, 2004. Yes, the bathrooms are interesting so wear sandals and my roommate and I didn't really get along. But, the location was ideal for classes, Miller was next door, food was paid for, and friends come easy if you're halfway social. Later in college, I lived with a guy I met a few doors down in my dorm.

Ultimately, I would recommend it to anyone first year. Rent, food, and other general responsibilities are taken care of and you meet a ton of people.

The stories are pretty good too. Had a guy on my floor punch out the fire glass to the stairwell door at 2:30 am. Blood all through the hallway and in the bathroom. Borderline biohazard...yes. But humorous from my end

Solid choice. Glad you ignored all the former hellions trying to convince you Herget was acceptable living conditions. There are also a lot of neckbeards/nerds in Broussard so I wouldn't worry about the guy/girl ratio. If you have any semblance of game you'll do fine with the girls

Herget 2nd floor, it was an extension of the Catholic League and I didn't have a problem with it. Almost everyone was from New Orleans or the north shore. Convenient to Rec, Miller and walking to the bars(pre-Uber). Being that classrooms were on other side of campus, helped force you to stay on campus and get your work done.

I lived in Mcvoy during summer school then Herget. Mcvoy was slightly better.

Herget had smell to it that is unmistakable and only exist in that hell hole.

Half the showers didn't work well and dude peep on all the toilet seats. No respect for the far end poop toilet.

any way it was a good time. Living there forces you to go out because the last place you want to be is in your dorm.
