I have seen this stated again and again in band threads on the Rant, as well. Damn shame that politics, as usual, screwed something up.

there used to be two givens at every LSU football game:

1: our band is going to kick your band's arse

and

2: no matter what happens on the field, we're going to win the tailgate

sadly both of those traditions have slipped away

I was in marching band my freshmen year of Hs and will disagree.
We did two weeks during summer to prep the halftime show and fundamentals.
Then once August got here, we did 2 hours classroom practice each day. On top of that we did after school practice for two hours on Tuesday and Thursday. Then on Friday we had games. On saturdays we would usually travel for fall competitions. A lot of work but not nearly as physical as football players out in the heat running around.

Even harder for woodwinds in our band. We don’t have em!

Auditions and tryouts every year. Turnover every year. He got cut his SR year, along with several other seniors. Constant practice, and if you can't improve or have a bad audition you're gone.
he got cut as a senior Trumpet player? Something ain’t adding up here

Yes, they have. LSU's current administration has killed both.

I can’t speak for the LSU band but there are only 200 marching spots in the Ohio State band. It’s beyond competitive and no one’s spot it guaranteed year to year. It’s an honor to make it and if you get in you’d better work your arse off to maintain your spot. There are also 20 alternates chosen each year.

Dotting the I is even another level. Only a senior tuba player and sometimes a special guest. I was there the day Jack Nicklaus dotted the I. It was very cool.

It was my understanding when I was there that in order to get a full ride you had to be a music major. I knew a few guys that got full-ride scholarships and I was invited to try out for one but I didn't want to major in music. It may be different now. And it wasn't $1,000 back then either, I think it was $640. I was just happy to get in the games and get free food after halftime.

They gave out two full ride Tiger Band Honor Scholarships per year when I started in the late 90s that were for non-music majors. I received one of the two my year, and there was an academic component as well as audition. They generally went to out of state students who didn't get TOPS.

Same.

I enjoyed Bengal Brass more than TGBFTL to be honest.

Many seniors got cut along with him. There's no promise you'll be there from year to year just because you're a senior.

THREAD HIJACK

Any of you former Tiger Band members wanting to relive old glories should check out the Tiger Rag Tag Marching Band. I marched in my first “Wearin’ of the Green” Parade in Baton Rouge this past weekend. Had a blast. Marching is optional (meaning we just walk and play). there is beer/drinks handed out along the route. You can play well, play poorly, or not play at all. There are enough decent players to make up for those who have fallen off over the years (like me). I’m sure we could use another piccolo to play the medulla oblongata in “Hey”, Tigerbandpiccolo.

The TRTMB marches in a Mardi Gras parade every year, usually Thoth, but this year marched in Houma. Hoping to March Spanish Town next year.
Completely laid back atmosphere, drinks, food, pre- and after-parties.

Give it a look. They are on Facebook.

I'm in the FB group, but have never done an event, because I been in TN. I also don't have a baritone and haven't played in 20 years.

ETA: And I never remember a senior getting cut. Definitely an occasional sophomore who snuck by as a freshman.
