I rented in Memphis from 2009-2012, and it was a thing for me.

Be an entrepreneur. Open a renter's insurance company.

We have to carry $300k in coverage where we live.

It's not expensive.

Solution would be to try and find someplace that doesn't require it.

My homeowners policy covered my daughter’s apartment for both liability and contents. Check with your agent.

Hell, it's not crazy to come here complaining about having to buy yet another policy with how high insurance has gotten. Pretty soon they will start offering insurance to cover the deductible.

Most places require it, and it costs like nothing. It's a great insurance backstop just in case. College furniture or not you've got a lot more value in there than you'd think.

They should. Pay around $20-25 a month for it. Too many examples of apartment fires and people losing all their stuff. It protects the renters if that happens.

had some dipshit set off the fire sprinkler system, insurance helped.
had my apartment burlarized, insurance helped
had my bike stolen, insurance helped

Like others have said. It's stupid cheap, can help your credit rating, and can help avoid a world of pain if you frick up or if you experience a loss.

As others have said the cost makes it a no brainer.

I bought it after having two bikes stolen from the gated underground parking garage where we were required to park bikes. I ate that loss.

I also had an apartment fire from another unit cause $7,000 in losses. They were uninsured but my policy paid it.

While you are at, it start thinking about an umbrella policy. With the crazy costs of cars this way I am certain many crash situations with 2 totaled cars and a serious injury your kids / or your insurance will quickly reach its limits and if you have assets...

I have a paid for house and cars (beaters) but I have a greater chance of keeping them if I screw up and cause an accident.

I had it 25 years ago. Didn't own very much and I had to use Louisiana Fair Plan because the potential losses were under 10k.

Wasn't required by the apartment complex.

Don’t endorse your HO policy to cover an apartment lease IF there’s a claim it will affect your policy renewal/rate.
Should be around $140/yr, apartment owner listed as an additional insured with a 30 day notice of cancellation.
Buy $300,000 liability limits, guy in Laffy used his brothers apartment to entertain while he was offshore and burned the complex down.
Named insured should be your kid but they can still bring you into a suit.
