Question for anyone who would know. Most Louisiana license plates are in a 3 character + 3 digit format.

What does a license plate that begins with "I" + 6 numbers represent? Does that have a special meaning or designation? Or is that just the old format that was aligned with the state troop for the area?

I did try that - didn't turn up anything definitive.

I wish we would adopt Mississippi's style of plates.

I also like that they add the county to the plates.

Just think you can see where the a--hole drivers are from when you have to honk your horn at them.

Most "light trucks" will have a single letter followed by 6 digits which differs from the 3 & 3 you will see on cars and small SUVs

“DI” starting letters is a dealer plate. “I” is likely some commercial designation. They start with a single letter, and which letter seems pretty random (though I doubt it is).

When we had a Troop B license plate 40+ years ago, it was 3 numbers, B, three more numbers. 7 total characters.

All parishes were the same format.

I even remember the license plate on my parents' 1972 Chevy Nova.

The license plate on my old Chevy has two numbers, the letter M followed by three numbers. Sportsman Paradise. 68/69
Troop M was headquartered out of Des Allemands.

I don't remember prior cars.

I was 11 y.o. in 1972.

They probably started with 1#, troop letter, 3#s, all the way up to 3# troop letter, 3# until they maxed out number of cars.

I don’t remember the year the State went to renewal stickers, but before then the plates were stamped with the year(s) they were valid.
As on mine on the bottom: 68 Louisiana 69

truck plates are now using m and 5 digits. I guess they ran out of C,Z,Y for truck numbers or used all the possible available.

I don't remember the years being on the 1972 Nova license plate, so between 1969 and 1972?

I lived in Texas for 30 years and got used to having and seeing plates on the front and the back. Last week I saw a car with Louisiana plates on the front. Was wondering if that's something you can request, but can't think of a reason to do that.

Does anyone know why someone would have Louisiana tags on the front of their car?

Google says:
quote:

In Louisiana, you might see a car with a front license plate because the vehicle is registered in an out-of-state jurisdiction that mandates two plates, such as Texas or Arkansas.
How do you have Louisiana tags in Texas or Arkansas?

I’m thinking the stamping ending in 73. I had a 74 and it had a renewal sticker on it. I remember because I was living out of state and the sticker was lost in the mail and the headache I had trying to get a replacement sticker.

Not sure.

All I know is that we had the same license plate on that Nova for many many years.

Maybe it was the 2nd plate on that car.

As a Mississippi resident, I can already guess most of the counties before I see the plates based solely on driving patterns

I’m waiting for the new blackout plates to start. I still can’t request one online.

I can't answer your question OP but I wish we would go back to this style of plate. The color scheme changed every year.
