I saw that episode and I was thinking "this dude thinks chasing his dream of fame is more important than being near his kids. That's not your typical 'feel-good' backstory".

I also thought the backstory didn't portray him in a very favorable light.

I understand a parent taking a well paying job elsewhere to support the family when there isn't a local job available or one which pays enough...something like that. People work offshore and are away from their children during that time, for example. Many contestants on these shows leave their children to try and be on the show, but those instances seem limited as if they become successful, presumably they move their families. However, leaving young children "to pursue one's dream" doesn't come off very well, at least not in the manner described on the show. Maybe there's more to his story than we were told.

I'm glad I'm not the only one who was taken aback by his backstory. I thought he looked like a pretty crappy dad and by extension not a great human being. I'm sure it's just they way the story was told in a brief segment, but man, I wouldn't have been happy about it if I were him.

It was a very strange story and usually the stories are supposed to move you in a good way, but his didn't.
