Thanks for the book suggestions. I recall the book "If I Die in a Combat Zone" as a kid but I didn't read it. I'm going by library on way home today and start it.

That's a touch and go - we have USAF and USMC lunatic pilots who volunteer to train for and do this mission.

Khe Sanh was the last time U.S. tactical nuclear weapons were uploaded in anger. We were *holds fingers very close togehter* close to nuking the NVA to avoid the overrun.

Thank G-d the US Army was able to rescue the Marines...again.

Crazy shite. I've actually seen a C-130(I assume) doing this outside of Abilene, TX. That somebitch came in low and didn't touch the ground but dropped a big arse container out the back and then pulled up and turned hard. I swear I thought it was crashing for about 10 seconds before my brain realized it was on purpose to simulate dropping shite off in a combat zone.

I've read the NVA were never interested in actually overruning the camp, they wanted to divert attention from the Tet Offensive buildup. They never tried to cut off the outside water supply, for instance.

ETA: And the Marine inaction during and after the fall of the Lang Vei Special Forces camp was shameful.

Another great read on the Vietnam War is a book I cited earlier titled Unheralded Victory by Mark W. Woodruff. It does a great job of breaking through many of the common lies and myths of the war. I recommend it to anyone wanting a better understanding of the truth of that very misunderstood war.

That buildup went on for like seven months prior to Tet. Amazing the logistics involved in the moving of equipment and personnel in preparation for the offensive. What's going on Darth 19K

The Tet offensive is one of the big subjects the book I just mentioned talks about. It was portrayed to the American public by the media as this big victory for the communists and a "turning point" that meant we could never win the war. The truth of the matter though was the exact opposite. Tet was nothing short of an unmitigated disaster for the communists and totally destroyed the Viet Cong as an effective fighting force. The NVA units engaged in the offensive were bled white and not a single communist objective was met other than to have the US media give them a "propaganda" victory... buy outright lying to the American public.

To reinforce this - I think they cobbled together 1 battalion sized VC unit for operations after Tet - if that - while VC battalions were relatively common before and leading up to Tet. They were never more than scouts and platoon sized raiders after that.

And another tough truth for the nation that was weaned on a very, very liberal media establishment - the U.S. actually won the war - Paris was a conditional surrender by the North - and the shameful U.S. Congress REFUSED to allow President Ford to enforce it in 1974 and 1975.

The victory purchased by our blood was casually discarded by our spineless national legislature.

Bingo. The Communists actually started taking NVA troops and putting them into Viet Cong units in order to try and hide the fact that the Viet Cong had for all intents and purposes ceased to exist after Tet.

MOTHERfrickING THIS! It can't be stressed enough that the US WON THE VIETNAM WAR!!! It drives me crazy when I hear about how we "lost" the war. That's an outright lie sold to the American public by freaking "new left" progressives.... The same progressives who controlled congress in 74 & 75 that abandoned our ally in South Vietnam and allowed them to be conquered when the North Vietnamese (who the Soviets had totally resupplied and rebuilt their shattered army) invaded AFTER the end of the Vietnam war.

The media often serves as the enemy of our national interests (and nation) but largely gets a free pass.

This has been especially true since the mid-1960's.

yeah, we won in Iraq and Afghanistan too. How much more blood and treasure must we spend to preserve the victory? $2 trillion not enough?

The Vietnam war ended in what, 1973? And you're still arguing over it 40+ years later. Next stop, Iran and Syria.

It's obvious that in purely military, on-the-ground terms, the US military devastated the other side. I mean, the kill ratios are truly staggering...BUT, that does not mean "the war was won".

The Treaty of Paris signed in 1973 meant we won the war. We forced the North to stop trying to overrun the South. Where things went wrong was after the fighting had stopped the US Congress (controlled by progressives) cut off all support from the US to South Vietnam. And while the Democrats in Congress stabbed our ally in the back, the Soviets went and totally rebuilt and resupplied the North Vietnamese Army and by early 1975 the North was ready to launch a new war that ended with the fall of Saigon.

Saying that the US lost the Vietnam War is like saying the French lost World War I which ended in 1919 because they surrendered to Germany in 1940.

Excellent post, sir. Not many people want to believe this.
