Probably hot work on a unit that still had had vapors or LELs on it. Cutting, welding, pressure washer, etc

Strange time to be cleaning tanks. Unless they had a crew cleaning and gas freeing the tanks for a hot work job to begin in the morning or possibly thought the tanks were already gas freed and they started burning.

Said “cleaning” chemicals caught fire in the article. Could be oil/condensate wells and they were pumping xylene to remove paraffin or asphaltene deposits or something similar.
Also could have been using flammable chemicals to clean sludge out of the tanks.

That's what I was thinking too. That they were cutting paraffin buildup, I mean.

Those crews that do chemical cleaning use explosion proofs pumps and job specific equipment. But if they had LELs where they weren’t expecting any spark can get bad in a hurry

Xylene is the standard universal paraffin solvent and it is a first cousin of gasoline. Very hazardous stuff
Those crews use generic xylene/toluene mix and pump/circulate to remove paraffin and sludge. But I am speculating, could have been a lot of different things that caused an explosion.

They use air diaphram pumps and diesel pressure washers with spark arresters as well as diesel air compressors.
Anything can go wrong if LELs are present.
