Sounds like you might have added some life to Howard's life and he likely appreciated your friendship even if he never told you. /salute RIP Howard the Jew

Howard the Jew did not seem like the sentimental type so when he reads your post he would likely say
But good work. Sorry for your loss.

got his Undergrad school wrong, but Howard was a man of few words as you can clearly see.
but another Howard story,
we're at a game and Howard is bitching about Graham taking too long to walk to the mound.
So I tease Howard by mentioning he ( Coach) moved quick enough to catch a younger wife and followed up with a question who do you think could get an erection quicker you or Coach Graham ?
he paused and replied I don't know, I also don't know what would piss me off more, not being able to get an erection or getting one and not having anything to do with it
that's why I loved him, he was a salty SOB

Thanks, but it was his time, when the call came I wasn't surprised. When I called others in our circle they were not surprised.
I told him I loved him last time we walked away from the ballpark, he gave me a dismissive wave. Howard was not the sentimental sort.
But I know in his late years these ballgames were he ONE activity he devoured the stats before the game. Know what pitcher on the other team was hot who was cold and he had thrown too many pitches in long relief and which opponent we should avoid throwing slow strikes too.
Those games gave him reason to live those last years. I'm glad I was a part of those games
