Should I look on Craigslist? How much can I get a good starter bike? I'm guessing I should look for a road bike. Any recs on a solid starter bike?

Be prepared to get little to no helpful advice and a ton of comments about how cyclists are the worst people in the world outside people who do crossfit.

Frick road riding...Mountain Biking in the woods FTW!

I own a Trek 320 hardtail I bought back in 2000. Still love riding the trails with that old thang

Just stay off the damn road please.

Honestly though go into a bike shop and get fitted. Then if you want to buy on CL make sure the measurements are ok.

If you get an ill fitting bike you will hate cycling and have back and knee pain.

My buddy has a "Specialized"? I believe that is the brand. don't know where they "start"? His was ON SALE for 4 about $3,000.

You can pick that whole damn bike up with on finger though.

For a beginner, buy a decent used mountain bike on craigslist. Don't get a road bike. See trek stumpjumper

I just got into it this past year too. Several models that are popular for beginners are Specialized Allez, Giant Defy 3, and Diamondback Century 1. If you are buying new, expect to pay close to $1000 for your bike. If you're buying from Craigslist, it will depend. The advantage of buying new is that you can always bring in your bike to the shop, and chances are they'll make adjustments for you free of charge.

I ended up with a Specialized Allez Sport that I got at the Bike Shop off of Cloverland, and I love it. I just passed 1000 miles since the beginning of June yesterday.

Are mountain bikes decent starter bikes? Still need to get fitted for one?

Yes. Much easier and more enjoyable to ride. And you won't be buying new tires once a month.

theres some pretty terrible advice in here, regarding choosing mountain bike over road bike. it all depends on the riding you want to do. if the majority of your riding is going to be on paved road for endurance or exercise it makes absolutely no sense to buy a mountain bike. you will be able to go much faster, longer and harder on a road bike. there is no comparison.

update OP with what type of riding you're planning on doing/what you hope to get out of it ... and you will get much better advice.

bullshite, you absolutely can go hard on a trail and be completely wiped out at the end. Plus the varying elevations and steep slopes make it much more challenging and enjoyable

It isn't as challenging here as it is in a place with lots of hills but the Comite trails in Central provide a great workout

If you are a guy like me who doesn't enjoy running because it gets boring, Mountain biking is the way to go
