Any suggestions? Looks like I need a brush, soap, and blades on top of the razor. I think wet shaving is a great skill to have. It's also way cheaper in the long run. I've found some bundles for about 80 bucks on Amazon. Any great deals I'm missing here?

There's a shaving thread on here. I recommend a merkur, Gillette blades, 100% badger brush, art of shaving cream and moisturizer. Cost me about $100 to start out and worth every penny.

join the badger and blade forum.

something like this would be great

a boar brush is better money value. a word of warning though. it seems on the front end that it will save you money but if you really enjoy it then you will find that more and more of your money will go to shave supplies. its a great hobby and I love it.

I recommend a Merkur long handle, 34 I think. Mitchell's Wool Fat is the best soap, it lathers fast. As makin said you will spend money because it is fun trying different stuff. Get a quality badger brush.

I have the Merkur long handled one. Great razor and can't suggest it enough. Some mention certain types of blades, but I would recommend a variety pack that has different types so you can choose the type you like. The great thing about safety razors are the blades are relatively cheap. I picked up 100 for around $12. Granted, you can typically get a week out of a single blade, but that's almost two years before I have to buy blades again.

I use a badger brush and Prosaro (sp) shaving soap. Once this is used, I think I will try Prosaro's sandalwood type next. Figure on getting roughly six months or more out of the shaving soap. I also got the escali razor/brush stand. It looks nice and I tell the wife it makes our bathroom look high style.

I love the shave - and the wife loves how smooth it is. Kinda like sex for your face.

Don't know the brand of mine, but it's a butterfly model, which is much quicker and easier to handle for quickly swapping blades. I'm currently using up all of my leftover Barbasol before making the full conversion to soap and brush.

1. Merkur 34C - can buy at Art of Shaving

2. Escali Badger Brush (great first brush) LINK

3. Blades are individual so get a variety pack. I use Feather Blades personally but they are very sharp and aggressive.

4. Get a mug or a scuttle and start with Proraso in the tube for the mug or a soap puck for the scuttle. Learn how to work up a lather in mug or scuttle.

5. Alcohol free witch hazel - sell it at whole foods

6. A good oil that will absorb. Apricot Kernel Oil or Jojoba is what I use. then use a an old school scent such as Pinaud, Bay Rum etc.

I bought a variety pack of blades like 3 years ago when I converted, still using them, maybe used half of the blades (I had a stretch of about 10 months with out shaving).

Alum bar
Proraso preshave cream
Taylor of old bond street cream, Eaton college collection.

Feather safety razor. If you don't like the blades that come with it, try this $20.25 35 blade sampler.
Elite Shaving Brush (synthetic) for $18.95
Pick a scent of Taylor of Old Bond Street for $13-15.
For a liquid after shave, try Skin Bracer available from Wal Mart for under $5. Amazon link to it. If you find the electric blue scent, I always thought it smelled better. It's either out of production or limited in production. The original (green) scent is good, too, though. I don't particularly care for after shave lotions.
For pre-shave, I use coconut oil. You can find liquid ones, but I use one that's solid at room temperature. I keep it in a bottle and toss it on the floor of my shower so that it's nice and liquid when it's time for me to use it.

Merkur 34C

I started with this one and like it so much I have not tried any others. Good weight and balance while shaving.

I have settled into the Feather blades. Very, very sharp. If you have overly sensitive skin they might not be the best choice for you but I experience no "pull" using these which is why I stuck with them.

I have tried several types of shave soap and the ones I like the most is Tabac. Very thick lather and unique masculine scent. A nice badger brush and soap dish should round out your shave set.

Also Captains Choice bay rum aftershave

ETA: Also dont forget to soak your razor in hot water before you shave. Usually in the mornings, Ill take a shower while my razor is soaking, then shave immediately following my shower.

I use the Gillette Good News Disposable and they last for me a long time. I shave in the shower and have my Mirror there. I wait until the end of the shower and by then the wiskers are soft and come off easy. Here in the Philippines you can get a big bag of them for cheap.

Not a traveler. At least more than a couple of days and never packed my razor. I would imagine as long as you don't keep the DE blades in your pocket you should be fine

Per TSA, you can check the blades, but you can't carry them on. You can buy a 5-pack of cheap blades when traveling for very cheap at most grocery stores, though. If you're a frequent traveler that doesn't check bags, it would be a pretty inconvenient way of shaving.

I haven't switched to safety razor yet, still using a Shick 5 blade, but I do use soap and a boar brush now.

So much better than shaving cream.
