You can get a great house at the $300,000 range
I completely agree. That's just way out of my price range for a first home. I'm really looking to stay around $200k max this time around.

If you are having children I would highly recommend moving out to the suburbs
That's the prime reason we are having to jump to a house now. I know public schools are better outside the parish, but we are planning to send kids to private school, so the school district doesn't matter as much to me.

Currently have apartment in EBR, but looking to finally get a house. For those in Baton Rouge and Prairieville, can y'all shed some light on the property tax differential?
You know you can look at the property maps for both of those parishes and see what people are paying.
AP GIS
EBR GIS
Find a house or area of houses on those maps. Then use the tax assessor's sites to punch in addresses to see the prop tax. An estimation of the house price is look at total assessed value x10.
26,000 assessed value would ~260k house to give you idea of the $ taxes you'd pay on different price houses.
AP Prop Tax

If that’s the case, I’d recommend staying in EBR

Stay away from all subdivisions in AP. You will grow to regret the decision of buying in a subdivision in Ascension Parish due to the crime activity. Subdivisions here are a magnet for break-ins.
yea, because EBR parish has none of this.
