In the process of converting a 2017 RAM Promaster into a camper van (similar to the one here) for some hiking trips across the U.S . Getting to the point where I need to find a carpenter for some of the woodwork (cabinets, countertops, etc.).

Does anyone have recommendations for a decently priced local carpenter/cabinet maker? I've reached out to a few but most are delayed 3-4 weeks and I'd like to get the project going sooner. Thanks!

Good luck. Ever since the flood these guys think their pay scale is on level with a brain surgeon or plant operator.

Guessing it wouldn't be any better trying to get someone over in Lafayette or elsewhere.

Well, you know for someone to become a master carpenter, it takes about 10-12 years of OJT. So yes, they can charge what it takes what ever their service is. And besides that, brain surgeons don't have to spend a easy 15-20K in tools.

I have no idea who to contact, but I'd love to see the progress on this when you get started. Maybe start a thread on the outdoor board. Good luck

Brian did my cabinets a few years ago. We talked before hand and designed the space to match my needs instead of just replacing the old stuff the way it was. They still look beautiful. He has since helped me with a table top that is stunning.

Great guy, great work.

I have nothing but respect for the skill of carpenters - but you obviously don't know much about how much medical equipment costs.

Yea, their tools cost way more. Was this a serious post?

I took that as the cost of the tools comes directly from the carpenter's pocket, while the hospital pays for the surgeons tools

Not sure that's accurate. But even if it is, I think it's a safe assumption that the costs of the education far exceed $15k to $20k

Get them made out of fiberglass it’s so much lighter than wood. The wood cabinets will be heavy and will hit your gas mileage.

I ended up talking to both Trey from Cabinets R Us and Jared from Laiche's Woodworking. Both seemed like solid choices.

I ended up going with Laiche's because they were able to take the job sooner. Their quote was very fair (almost 40% less than what some other BR shops quoted me). I stopped by Jared's shop yesterday to check on the work and everything looked great.

I'll post photos once we finish up the van.
