mate, this was a long time ago.
traffic is clusterfrick now every weekend during the summer. we have a time share 4th of July right next to you, and even back then it wasnt bad. you could pull out and drive wherever you wanted rather easily.
between now and then we've tried to schedule around what we thought was just a busy weekend, but nope. Even random weekends in june and early august see a lot of people. We've since made our way west to OB or further east along 30A. frick destin

Might want to try out the Navarre Properties in Navarre Beach ( link to property listings). only about a 30-35 minute drive to Destin when you want to go over there to water parks and what not with the kids.
I know you said you don't mind the crowds, but I'll still give my 2 cents on it. Forgive me. Navarre Beach far enough away from the craziness of Destin if you don't wanna deal with public beaches packed with people. I always enjoy visiting Destin, but love to come back to a calmer/cleaner place. Has a long pier that the kids will enjoy walking up and down and watching what the local fisherman reel in.
Would also suggest stopping in and eating at Pompano Joes when you are in Destin regardless of where you stay. Has been a local favorite for a long time and my trip is never complete until I eat there.
I'm jealous of the trip. Went there for a handful of years in a row with the family but it has been around 4 years since last visit. Enjoy.![](https://images.tigerdroppings.com/Images/Icons/Iconcheers.gif)

Not telling yall where I like to go either lol. Good food, no crowds, and cheaper. There's no water park, go carts, or puttputt courses though
Yeah but not everyone wants to hang out at grande isle

along the old scenic 98 hwy and San Destin are the only tolerable places, imo

LOL
We have always gone around Mid to late May or maybe a quick 3 day trip in September. I've never had issues with crowds. Usually eat in the condo, but have been venturing out more the last few years

I don't find it to be all that bad either... sure, there's traffic, but it's not like it's this "bumper to bumper, can't pull out on to 98 and it takes an hour to go a mile or anything like that" at least I've never found it to be that way any time that wasn't either spring break, memorial day or the 4th.

The traffic doesn't affect me much because when I vacation at the beach I'm usually at the beach and not driving around. Once I buy groceries my vehicle rarely leaves the parking garage.

Avoid holiday weekends and it's ok. Go during the week and the traffic is no problem.
I've always liked the Indian temple mound museum.

Aegean
We rented this place last year and it was great. Aegean is an older condo but most units appeared to be updated. As you can see it's a smaller condo complex so walk right out the door to the pool or ocean. Our car was parked eight feet away from the front door. This complex was also mostly owners that didn't rent so it wasn't busy at all. This end of the beach is nice because it's not as busy as other areas. In fact the beach was never busy in front of this place.
The grocery and liquor store was right across 98 from gulf shore drive. It was a quick drive or even bicycle ride into the heart of Destin and the marina. All in all it was a nice laid back condo for a family with kids and was spacious but not a spot for college kids.
Really any of the condos off of gulf shore drive were nice and I wouldn't want to stay further east down 98. Gulf Shore drive is a nice central area to everything.

It cracks me up to see the people who leave on a Friday afternoon to head to the beaches from La in big weekends and then act shocked when they are stuck in traffic getting through Mobile
Posted on 1/29/16 at 11:02 am to notiger1997
Mobile does suck dick though. It's like another Baton Rouge blocking the I-10
Posted on 1/29/16 at 11:05 am to biglego
Luckily I live the last exit before the Bayway headed West so I don't have to frick with the tunnel
Posted on 1/29/16 at 11:15 am to notiger1997
The Mobile tunnel may be easily avoided.

Yeah, I was in college a long time ago. But they only sold it 3 or 4 years ago. I know it has gotten a little worse, but I don't think it would be a cluster every week in the summer. Maybe coming from the east or west. I came down through backroads after Montgomery and popped out at Ft Walton or Mid Bay Bridge, depending on what nothing towns I felt like driving through that evening.

dont get me wrong, I-1O coming from the west is a bitch most weekends during the summer, but im not really talking about the traffic getting to and from. More so the traffic once you get there. Im all for not leaving the condo, but also get stir crazy if i sit around there too much. Plus crowded streets= crowded beaches
once you sit around on a beach with no people or very few people, you never want to go back to a place like Destin before.

I'm with you there. Only reason we kept going was because it was free. The past three summers we've been to the end of PCB a couple of times and to a rental house in gulf shores once. 3 level condo building where you're right at the pool and 10 steps from the beach. We also took a trip to perdido one year and to the Grand in point clear late that summer. All of those are nice since I have young kids but he was asking about walking distance to water parks and older kid activities.

The Grand in Point Clear is awesome. Can't wait to get back there
