I think they must have had good feedback with the Milgauss, outside of the second hand, and decided to use those colors on this line. It's the right size, and the bezel is nice. The mixed type A and B dial is tricky.
Bloodhound SSC holds the land speed record. Rolex did the dials for it seen here:
The new Air-King is clearly an homage to those dials, but was that in the press release? Nah. Also it's the land speed record so I'm not sure why they did this to the Air King.
OP: Get an Explorer I from DavidSW and call it a day. Or spend dozens of hours fretting about it like most of us do.

et me know if there's a specific reason to stay away from the used market in Rolex (or others). That eBay love sting gives you a 30 day money back guarantee so that makes me feel better about it being legit and I'd def bring to a jeweler in first 30 days to make me feel better if I did get it.
There is no reason in the world not to buy a used Rolex. The watch will outlast you or me. There are millions of reasons to stay the F away from ebay. Rolexforums.com has a classifieds that is much more policed - very, very heavily policed actually. If someone has a post history of any length, they're legit. Timezone and Watchuseek also have good classfieds but each has more members so there are more idiots, naturally. DavidSW, linked above, got his start in the Rolexforums classifieds and now has a brick & mortar in Orlando.

I would definitely pick up a new watch through DavidSW.
Don't get me wrong - nothing wrong with a used watch. But for some reason or another, it has always bothered me.
I would also check out the new Rolex Oyster Perpetual 39mm, ref. 114300. One of the best watches Rolex has produced in quite some time. The new explorer is also great. I prefer the current iteration to the former iteration, since they finally used proper sized hands.
