I'm looking at purchasing a new F-150 and had some questions for you knowledgeable folks out there...

Do the addons with the Lariat trim justify the price spread versus the XLT trim? Are there concerns about the EcoBoost engine versus the other types?

If i'm mostly using the truck for commuting and light towing, would I get by just fine with 2wd? I'm in the Midwest so even highway driving during the winter can be treacherous with snow.

What actual MPG do you get versus the EPA ratings?

What bed cover would you recommend?

In my opinion, yes.

No. There were some issues when the Ecoboost first came out in 2011-2012, but those issues have been resolved.

Yes.

Then no If you get snow yearly, get 4wd..

If you do mainly highway, you should beat the combined rating by 2-3 mpg and be close to the highway number. But if you get the Ecoboost, it all depends on how much time you make boost. They get thirsty if you like to make the turbos whistle.

I'm in Indiana so we get 20-30" of snow in a normal winter, probably 3-4 bad days of driving with snow on the road.

My commute is ~20 miles with ~15 miles highway and ~5 side roads.

Yes. Definitely.

No. The 3.5L is a kick in the pants, the 2.7L is fine if that's your thing.

I'd advise on 4x4 for two reasons: 1) the damn snow and 2) resale value. You can sell a 4x4 truck much easier.

As long as you're spending big cheese on a new truck, get a Roll-N-Lock.

Way too many things to list honestly. Go to Ford's site and build one to see all the differences. Main things are leather, heated and cooled seats, and intelligent key. But there's a lot more too.

The first part of this question is too subjective to answer. I have an xlt explorer and i find the interior fine the next step up would be the limited in my car, similar to your lariat trim. If you want a more loaded vehicle, and that trim slightly improves resale, then go for it if not, then dont bother wasting the money up front.

The ecoboost has had problems in the past but is being more refined. My buddy has a 13 ecoboost and loves it, no major problems yet. I drove it and it does have some nice power to it.

get 4wd, dont even think about it.

I drove an ecoboost from atl to myrtle and got 19mpg going 80mph the whole way in an equipped 4wd. not bad. my ram with a 5.7 would have done 15.

spray on. rhino lining, from factory, linex, all goood. you are going to want to get a solid bedliner since that aluminium bed is fragile.

[edit] just reread this. roll n lock.

I don't call the things I listed cosmetics, but that's just me.

for stuff that counts for you, yes they're basically the same.

ETA: No need for you to even consider an XLT then, you 'd be just fine with the XL.

Sounds like you would be better suited with a Subaru.

I gotta have my heated and cooled seats

Also, I dont think all the XLT's have navigation and 8" screens. Also no moon roof

My last truck was an 09 XLT. My current truck is a 12 Lariat.

Eh. The only feature that makes me like the lariat more is the heated and cooled seats. I mean, they are amazing, but I can live with out them.

I haven't a clue about driving in snow.

With the 09 V8 I was getting ~16 MPG after 100,000. Early on ( < 30,000 miles) I could get 20-21 when I tried.

With the 12 EcoBoost V6 I'm getting ~17.5 MPG @ 90,000

Good question.

Just bought a new F150 last month and asked myself all the same questions you did.

I went with the Lariat with 502a package. Well worth the money to me. Chose the 3.5 Ecoboost just because of the way the engine performed vs the V8. It is much quicker. I've only heard of problems with the first release of the Ecoboost.

Bought FX4 mainly due to resale, as another poster mentioned. The dealership showed me multiple examples of where you get your money back on the 4wd.

I do a lot of highway driving in Houston and to Louisiana. Getting 19.5 right now. Keep in mind I only have 800 miles so this should improve.

Also looking for bed cover suggestions. Will follow this thread.

I have no regrets on the purchase. It's the first Ford I've ever owned and love it so far.
