Local camping areas

Looking to make a drive somewhere to go camping for the weekend. I live on the northshore and want to go somewhere other than the parks. Has anyone been to tunica hills? Any suggestions other than tunica?

How the hell do ya'll camp this time of the year down here? Between the bugs and the heat, it's just never been fun for me unless maybe I was on a sandbar on a river.

You're probably looking for the waterfalls at Clark Creek Natural Area instead of Tunica Hills. It's a common mistake. Also, no camping there.

I'd think Kisatchie National Forest near Alexandria would have what you're looking for.
For a shorter drive, check out Clear Springs Rec Area. It's west of Natchez, MS in the Homochitto National Forest.

There is a place in Kisatchie, about 15-20 miles west of Natchitoches that is nice. There is a sandy/Ricky bottom clear water creek that runs through there you can camp next to.

I think Tunica Hills Wildlife Management Area (in Louisiana-- LINK) does have a primitive camping area, but at this time of year there's not much to do around there except hiike in the heat or go to the nearby Clark Creek trail.
Kisatchie has some pretty good camping areas. I remember one was near a creek with a sandy beach area...not sure how the flooding in NE LA have affected it.
ETA: sorry, just noticed posts above about Kistachie. I don't recall it being near a ranger station; I think that one is on the far western part of Kisatchie.

I just looked it up...the one I'm talking about is Kisatchie Bayou campground in Kisatchie National Forest.

There is one on US HWY 117. Great hiking trails in the Wilderness Area that is about 5 miles drive from camping area to trail head.

There's a nice camping area in Kisatchie by Valentine Lake.
I like to camp in the DeSotto National Forest in Mississppi. The area around Black Creek is nice. Janice Landing has some tent pads and a bathroom. Good trails.

Go to Cajun palms in henderson. No hiking, but they have a great pool with swim up bar. Baseball games will be in this weekend, so it will be rowdy. Gets expensive floating and drinking all day.
