I get an idea in my head, a booger in my brain I call it, and I can’t stop until it’s complete. It’s an obsession almost. The words fall into place and insist upon themselves until I write it down.

I don’t know if you are familiar with “The Raven” but it’s a famous work by Poe.

And so I’m going through and stanza for stanza, in meter, retelling the tale of the 2019 Bama LSU game


Here’s the start to give you an idea

Coach O and “The Saban”


Once upon a season dreamy,
Tigers winning, quite unseemly,
In Nineteen the offense furious,
Like none we had seen before—
    On they plodded, fans a clapping , to Texas they’d dealt a slapping,
It seemed that none would be snapping, winning streak of Tiger scores
“’Tis a lucky break,” They muttered, pundits doubted and ignored —
            They can’t keep it up they swore

    Ah, distinctly I remember, Bama loomed for in November;
For eight times we well remembered,
Eight times we’d been beat before
    Domination had been thorough;—sure of victory they were though
    For this time they had Joe Burrow —Burrow much unlike before—
For the rare resilient gamesman who shall live in football lore—
           Peerless here for evermore.

    And the Bama fans were certain, even with their Tua hurtin’
Rammer—Jammer would be screamed by the Gumps at home once more;
    Much like sheep, they gathered bleating, no rival would be defeating
    Nick at home, they’d be repeating,
LSU stopped like before—
Win the west once more repeating,
Playoff bound one season more;—
            Of their winning they were sure

    Sister wives and nephsons gloated, in their trailers, Fridges loaded,
Up with beer and whisky until they could scarcely close the door,
    Big screens tuned to football channels,
Next to walls with faux wood panels,
    As they smoked their meth and camels,
Crimson jerseys they all wore,
Skin to skin with kin they cuddled,
Beanbags on linoleum floor;—
             9 times in a row they swore.

    Then the kickoff came to cheering, as the Tigers looked on fearing,
Doubting, as the crimson tide drove down the field like times before;
    But the defense was unbroken, whispered hopes of Tigers spoken ,
    Stopped a run a pass was broken up’ their hopes were raised once more,
Tagovailoa, ran on third and 8 looking like he would score—
            Then the Bama fans all swore

    Though untouched, the ball he fumbled,
Out his hands the pigskin bumbled,
And the Defense dove upon it, in the stands the Tigers roared
    “Surely,” said they “surely that is by the corndogs witchcraft practiced;
      A QB, so skilled in tactics, couldn’t keep the ball secure —
To this day what shook the ball loose is a mystery to explore;—
            No one really knows for sure
