He's definitely putting a black object into the purse as he clears the door, and the pipes were in a black sleeve.
Maybe he removed the black sleeve from the purse and was just replacing it, but it is kind of a bad look.

he was probably looking through it while it was in the front seat. could've taken it out and we didnt see it.

Extremely possible. It certainly looks bad, and any half-way decent lawyer will be able to use that to get the charges dropped.
Idk what the sop is while searching bags, but I'd think you're probably supposed to grab it and search it in front of a camera.
But like I said, I have no clue.
