You can't really do anything to punish them yourself. You have to give it to the ethics review board or just drop it.

There's no power in your hands.

Just 0 the assignment or harsher penalty for lying about it?
How many times did she have to plagiarize in order to be caught once? No telling. Lying is just an extension of the plagiarism. At least give her a 0 on the assignment. But it wouldn't be going overboard if you gave her a worse penalty than that.

When I was in law school our honor board had a girl plagiarize an academic paper. They intended to let her take a hit and give her a road to recover. She blatantly and repeatedly lied and concocted ridiculous shite to excuse her cheating and lying.

They absolutely crushed her and pretty much ruined her future in law.

I have a hard time figuring out how you plagiarize in law school.

All you do is grab a bunch of cases. Take excerpts from each. Jumble them around to make a point/idea. Throw some tiny numbers and Ids. around and call it a day.

If she just copied someone else doing that then she needed to be dealt with as she was.

Broke,
you did the right thing. you gave her an opportunity to come clean and would have kept it "hush, hush". instead she continues to lie in the face of clear evidence. you then send it "up the food chain". she had her chance. let her pay the price now.

Ask him what type of watch he would buy if he only had $1,500.

If he says Tag Heuer, go to every imaginiable length to have him expelled from the university.

If he says any other brand, go with link's idea.

She blatantly lifted long stretches of legal explanation for use in a journal writing, without attribution.

I'll normally announce to the class that i have found some papers that are plagiarized and give them an opportunity to come to my office hours to explain themselves. If the plagiarist comes to me, I give them a chance to rewrite their paper at a penalty. If they never show, I contact them of the situation. If they admit it, I completely remove the sections of the paper that are plagiarized, then try and grade it. If they deny it, I turn it over to academic affairs and give them a zero.

I don't know why, but it is kind of fun grading these papers redacted to shreds. Plus, I might catch one or two extra plagiarists, though 99% of the time their papers are fine.

My class size is normally under 30 people though, so this might not be an option for you.
