My 5 year old daughter has played a season of Little League baseball and is now starting her first season of softball. She is naturally left handed. I know being a lefty batter is an advantage, but I think there might still be time to teach her to throw right handed. In baseball, the only IF positions open to a lefty are 1B and pitcher, but the limitations are offset by the advantages of being a lefty pitcher, I’m not convinced the differences in arm slot and ball movement in softball will make being a lefty pitcher as useful. Should I try to swap her to a right-handed thrower while there is still time? I’d love to hear thoughts if anyone has experience in this area.

Let her throw from her dominant side.

Never make a kid that young do something that isn't natural to them. This is the only solution. Teach her to embrace her unique natural ability, not run from it.

Meh. As a lefty I do a lot righty. Golf, bat. Just the way the world is. Not sure I'd force it. Let's see what other people say.

She’s 5. Throwing and catching isn’t exactly natural yet. I’m a righty, but if you were to toss me a ball, I would catch it left-handed. That’s because I was taught to catch it left-handed.

If you tell her to pick something up and throw it, without any guidance, which hand would she use? That's a natural instinct, not one that is taught.

Seems like your mind is already made up.

Do you have a tall and athletic family?

If so, and throwing left handed comes natural to her work on first base and pitching with her. Chances are if she's really good a coach might throw her at SS anyway when she's young.

I would say stick to what is natural for her.

At this point she would use left because that’s what I taught her. Early on, she would use both hands, but probably favored left. My first tball practice I picked up a lefty glove because I wanted my right had for catching since I was right hand dominant. It didn’t occur to me that I would need it for throwing. I was taught to catch left-handed out of necessity and now I’m better at it than I am right handed. That’s why I think she could be taught to throw with her non-dominant hand.

Depends on how she projects frame wise. If she’s quick enough, she could play OF as a lefty.

Let her use her dominant arm also. I messed up with my daughter who is naturally left handed, but I taught to throw right.

She did play college ball, but I never felt like she threw the ball as hard as if I’d let her throw left handed.

Billy Wagner was a righty until he broke his arm as a child and taught himself to throw left-handed. Turned out okay.
Mickey Mantle’s father Mutt insisted Mickey be a switch hitter despite his objections and frustration. That turned okay as well.
Grandson (7) throws left but bats right. Refuses to bat left (so far). Gonna be a really good player in any case.

Teach her to throw an underhand knuckle-ball.

Elway and bo said they both grew up throwing rocks at everything. Set her up some targets in the back and get her some lightweight stuff to throw.

Be careful. Butch lesbians have taken over the sport so you should watch over your daughter like a hawk.

Softball, let her play with dominant natural arm.

Nowwwww, if this was a “son,” most definitely put tube sock on right hand and tie around his back.

the only IF positions

This is a small compromise. You get all the benefits of being left handed, the righties at least get the 3 infield positions.

What you don’t realize yet, is: those 3 infield positions are the hardest to get. If you try out for elite teams those are the only 3 positions no one is looking for. Thus you make the better teams by playing OF, pitcher, or 1st. If 50 kids show up to a tryout, 49 of them have INF as their first or second position.

So no, stay left handed and never apologize for God’s gift to her.
