quote:Bit what I’m hearing. What I’m hearing from folks close to this is that Belarus(Lukashenko) is scared shitless if they enter this war the huge popular uprising/protests the military put down last year will spark again and Luka the dancing bear will find himself hanging from a lamp post, Chechen leader is worried he’s vulnerable as well. This precipitated the necessity for Syrians. Belarusian soldiers are disobeying direct orders to attack and supposedly will turn on Russian commanders now…Nope Putins lost this and he can’t afford too many more days at this. Domestically he’s now more vulnerable than after the Georgian invasion. Those that know, know.
The Ukrainians are going to eventually lose this war. Putin will keep pouring shite into Ukraine until he has complete control, no matter what he can’t afford to lose or he is dead

I was a protocol officer in the Czech Govt from 95-98 originally with Ministry of Industry and Trade but loaned to Defence for last year. I’ve worked on NATO accession talks and seen Europe including Russia, Ukraine and the Baltics on the Czech Taxpayers dime. So I know a few people.

See you know. Worked closely with American interests on the Vera system. Actually Chernobylling the system would be more succinct.

Fair enough. I also worked in Ukraine for the US government and traveled in Russia, Belarus, Central Asia, and the Caucuses on the US taxpayers dime.
I'm just not so sure the Russian or Belarussian military/ security services have the same liberal/revolutionary mindset as the Czechs. Certainly sloth and passive resistance could be partly derailing this whole thing. I'm just not that optimistic about liberal revolution. I could actually see someone in both countries who is more hard line than Putin or Lukashenko getting frustrated and taking over.

@AFP
Looks like be was freelancing and using an old NY Times press badge. He was covering the refugee crisis, and looks to have been shot after passing through a checkpoint.

Belarus was teetering on the edge before this and if you’re in touch with the same sort of folks I am-you’ve got some of the same indicators, if Belarus’ military refusal expands and my people believe it will at a minimum, ie possible Military fractures, luka is going to be deposed and it might actually be Russia trying to replace an ineffectual puppet leader. Some people know this, some don’t but Putin hates Luka. Has since that dinner after polonium London incident where Luka made jokes poking fun at Putin for his clumsy assassinations.

Or another tool to draw support from the American public for intervention in Ukraine.

The story is that he and his work partner were working on a project regarding refugees. Supposedly, it has been a running project that isn't just about Ukraine.

They did a bit of a poor job letting the fact that he was a independent working with expired press credentials. They could have just glossed over that fact. He's not the only freelancer from the US there right now.
