For your consideration the great grandad of the A-10 warthog I present to you the Ilyushin IL-2 Shturmovik.

One of the very first purpose-built ground attack aircraft. The Germans called it "der schwarze tod" which translates as the black death.

This is a 1/48th scale Tamiya IL-2 flown by Captain Ivan Fomich Pavlov of the 6th Guards Attack Aviation Regiment, 1st Baltic Front, April 1945 Konigsberg Germany.

The Cyrillic writing on the side roughly translates as "To the fellow countryman, hero of the Soviet Union. To Pavlov from Kustany, from the workers."

Fantastic work! That was a beast of an airplane. The pilot was basically setting in an armored bathtub.

Being a Tamiya kit, I imagine the build was fun and relaxing.

It was indeed a sweet build. Hardest part was that one piece decal with all the writing and the star built into it on the left hand rear fuselage. I was so scared it was going to tear trying to get it in position. And these new Tamiya kits come with pre-cut window masks which makes that tedious job 10 times easier.

Looks great. Do you use Micro-Sol and Micro-Set?

That makes a big difference. The Hobby Boss 1/48 TBD Devastator I built a few months ago had them.

Saved me a ton of time and effort in masking the usual way.

Yes I use both micro sol and micro set as decal setting solutions. Sure makes them conform over irregular surfaces.

One of the German aces said the only weak spot was the oil cooler under the fuselage

The Soviets built them by the thousands. I believe it was the most produced Soviet airplane of the war.

Michael J Fox comes in handy in these situations.

Clean arse cockpit glass, nice masking.

Super vivid color pattern, completely appropriate for that bird.

Fine work. Love it.
