My great grandmother received my great grandfather’s widows pension from the State of Louisiana until she died in late 1949. He died in 1914. The amount was approx. $15.00 per month.

That's kind of crazy to think about. Her Civil war husband died in 1939. I had a great uncle who fought in WW1 and died in the same year. Just kind of boggles the mind that two US Veterans from two wars that far apart dying in the same year.

That’s really insane to think about.

The 10th president John Tyler’s last surviving grandson: A bridge to the nation’s complicated past

quote:

Due to a series of mini-strokes starting in 2012, Harrison lives almost without time. It would be quite a change for anyone, but it’s particularly so for someone like him, who grew up steeped in family history. Harrison was raised in his grandfather’s hunting lodge; his grandfather — John Tyler, the 10th president of the United States — was born in 1790.

That is not a typo — 1790, as in, during George Washington’s first term.

And yes:

"Why, Johnny Tyler! Madcap! Where ya goin' with that shotgun?"

Imagine being widowed at 20 years ago. And she never even remarried or took his pension. That was one strong independent woman.

I don't mean to sound like a dick, but man, that sounds like one incredibly sad life.

Married at 17, to a freaking 93 year old. Then she never cashed out on the only benefit from that marriage, and she proceeded to never even remarry, or really marry for the first time.

I still find the John Tyler story fascinating. Two generations of a family fathering kids in their 60s & 70s.
